Re: GPS Beacons?

I've been using the (older) DeLorme inReach SE for about 5 years now. It's been a great device and I haven't had any issues with it. I keep it set to mark my location every 10 minutes while 'tracking' is on, and occasionally it will missing sending the location due to poor satellite connection. But ...

Re: E-Readers for backpacking?

Not discussed in this article is how one uploads material to the eReader, save for a discussion of 3G cell phone on the most expensive eReaders vs Wi-Fi on the cheaper. Would be nice to have a memory slot/USB port so could access books we already have on cards and portable drives. The article is a ...

Re: Shale lake loop 7/26-7/28/19

Nice report and pictures. Thanks for sharing the status of the area, and the bugs conditions. It's one of my favorite places to hike and I get up there just about every year.

I'm headed up there next month and looking forward to it.

Re: E-Readers for backpacking?

A big bump. My wife and I are interested in an E-Reader we can carry for backpacking. Anyone have a recommendation for today's offerings? Features we would want: Long battery life. Waterproof. Ability to write text without BT keyboard--do that trip report on the trail! Overdrive and Libravox compat...

Re: big black bear track

That's a big print. Fresh looking too, right?

I can't guess at the size... maybe someone with more experience than me will chime in.

Re: Mountain House at Costco

Good to know, thanks!

Those prices are much better than the full retail prices charged at most stores. I buy these every year from Costco, often more than one case.

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

There are more than 4 million people in Oregon. Factor in the number of Oregonians as well as people from outside Oregon that want to hike and backpack in the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests, and I suspect most of us will have trouble finding permits during peak season. The quota numbers a...

Re: looking for a minimalist day pack

I've been using an Osprey Kestrel 38 pack in the large size as my primary day pack since 2011. It still looks like new, except for the dirt here and there. All seams, stitching and material is still in like-new condition, and I've done over 100 hikes with it. In fact, I'm wearing that pack in my for...

Coming back past ski-bowl on Sunday, there were dozens of cars parked at the "old" spot and about 10-12 groups walking on the side of the highway.
Yeah! Wayne aka Koda and I saw those cars on Sunday, parked along the road. Seems they didn't get the memo.
