Re: Duffy Lake + surprise Goat sighting 8/21/2020

Great report. Nice to see mountain goats venturing into that area!

I've scrambled to the top of Duffy Butte before, from the east side (we were camped at Mowich Lake). The view from the top is spectacular. We sat on the very top for a long time, soaking it in.

Re: what if the permit box is empty?

Take a photo of the empty permit box as evidence of your inability to comply with their demands. ;)

...The highlight of the day was running into the legendary Mayhem at the junction of FL 4 and the Maple Trail... dn DN, nice to see you ran into Mayhem, hope he is doing well. Sure miss those looney TR's. Yes, would have been great to run into Mayhem. Last time I saw him was at a Fred Meyer store, ...

Re: Elk Creek Campground Open Year-round

Yes, a nice option for winter camping. Also, it gives day hikers easier access and more parking closer to the WRT and Elk Creek trailheads.

Re: GPS Beacons?

I've been using the (older) DeLorme inReach SE for about 5 years now. It's been a great device and I haven't had any issues with it. I keep it set to mark my location every 10 minutes while 'tracking' is on, and occasionally it will missing sending the location due to poor satellite connection. But ...

Re: E-Readers for backpacking?

Not discussed in this article is how one uploads material to the eReader, save for a discussion of 3G cell phone on the most expensive eReaders vs Wi-Fi on the cheaper. Would be nice to have a memory slot/USB port so could access books we already have on cards and portable drives. The article is a ...

Re: Shale lake loop 7/26-7/28/19

Nice report and pictures. Thanks for sharing the status of the area, and the bugs conditions. It's one of my favorite places to hike and I get up there just about every year.

I'm headed up there next month and looking forward to it.

Re: E-Readers for backpacking?

A big bump. My wife and I are interested in an E-Reader we can carry for backpacking. Anyone have a recommendation for today's offerings? Features we would want: Long battery life. Waterproof. Ability to write text without BT keyboard--do that trip report on the trail! Overdrive and Libravox compat...
