Catherine Creek and trails above Sunflower Hill, 3/16/24

I'll add another Catherine Creek report from the past weekend's tease of spring to come. IMG_6721.jpeg I arrived at the parking lot around 9:45 am finding plenty of parking space at the main CC lot, so not nearly as busy as it will be in weeks to come, but by noon it looked like the lot was complete...

What an awesome trip! I choose to enjoy the sun by hiking Catherine Creek, but I wish I had thought of this opportunity. Maybe next week.

Re: Guatemala - February 2024

Wow, what an amazing trip! Even without making it to El Mirador, you saw a lot. Those volcanic mountains are so majestic, and enticing. I'm struck by how symmetrical and smooth the volcanoes look -- is that because they are, geologically speaking, still young and haven't had much time to erode, or d...

Re: Herman Creek 012924 Not ready for prime time!

Ha! Those are my tracks. I was there on Sunday 1/28. I didn't bring microspikes because I wasn't expecting that much snow and ice (having been lulled by the ridiculously warm temps in the Portland area), but I was still able to navigate. I made it to Camp Creek where I was stopped by a very swollen ...

Zig Zag Mtn 1/1/24

I usually turn to cross-country skiing in the winter, but as Charley noted in another post , this snowless winter has meant no skiing so far. But this has opened up a number of interesting winter hiking options. I've made four hiking/snowshoeing trips above tree line on Mt Hood so far this winter. M...

Re: Labyrinth Trail (Dec 28)

Thanks for the nice post. I too enjoy hiking the eastern gorge in winter for its austere beauty. I appreciated your photos of "the little things" that so many of us enjoy about hiking, but don't always talk enough about. Also, your "easter egg" is creepy. I'm not sure I'll be able to walk by that ca...

Re: Deception Butte 12-4-23

From here it's up, up, up: 2500 feet in 2 1/2 miles, or thereabouts. A good workout for this ex-Indiana senior citizen though I'm sure you spring chickens who think nothing of running laps around Mount Hood aren't impressed. Yeah, 1000'/mile is a respectable workout, at least for this no-longer-spr...
