Re: Wonderland Trail September 2020 - Smoke & Mist

Wow! very cool. Mountains are great, even if you don't get to see them clearly.

Re: Pine Way Trail #71 (Mt. Adams) 10-7-20

Thanks for a historically and biogeographically informed writeup. Forget about thinning out grand fir. You want a pondo pine parkland again, stop suppressing fires and restore the aboriginal burning regime. I'd be in favor. Either management strategy, thinning or controlled burn, seems to be a prob...

Re: McNeil Pt ramble 10/17/20

I went up that ridge, but was more persistent than you. I only tolerated it because I was hiking a loop, so only had to suffer through that section one way. It gets better, but you were right to bail and go looking for the trail. Details here, if you're interested: https://www.oregonhikers.org/foru...

Re: Cairn Basin Stone Shelter

Isn't/wasn't there one at Cooper Spur? Given the historic nature of the stone shelters, seems like there ought to be some effort to maintain them. Maybe there is that I'm not aware of. But the stone over the doorway (the lintel) of the shelter at McNeil is in danger of collapsing. It'd be nice to cl...

McNeil Pt ramble 10/17/20

IMG_7544_Email.jpg On Sat I set out for a much needed excursion into the wilderness. I decided to hike to McNeil Pt, continuing up the ridge above the shelter and then travelling off-trail over to Cairn Basin. I know doing McNeil pt on a Saturday, even a Saturday in late October, is not exactly inv...

Re: Little Badger Creek backpack with kids

Love that area for trips with the kids! Great job getting them out into the wilderness. The hike up School Canyon trail to the helispot is another nice one when they're a little older. I've camped there a few times and didn't feel too exposed.

Cairn Basin Stone Shelter

I was hiking Sat 10/17 up in the McNeil Pt area and scrambled down into Cairn Basin. Found quite a lot of mature trees blown down -- probably 10-20. One trio landed on the Cairn Basin stone shelter. IMG_7566_Email.jpg IMG_7567_Email.jpg IMG_7569_Email.jpg Here are the trees that landed on the shelte...

Re: Hunchback Trail(Zigzag to Pyramid) Report 7/21/2020

Thanks for the report. For being just off Highway 26, that is an amazingly unpeopled hike. I suspect that super steep first section keeps many folks away. Good job to the OP for staying the course and making it to the Pyramid. Try this hike in May-June and you'll probably be treated to a spectacula...

Re: Silver Star South Ridge – 7-20-20

Just before the junction with the Grouse Vista Trail, I took note of the Pyramid Rock Trail tunneling down through Sitka alder (I’ve never done that one). Do you mean the dotted line on this map? Silver Star Map.png I've bushwacked a few of times down from the Indian Pits or Silver Star 2 to the So...

Re: Silver Star-Chinook-Tarbell Loop 07-28-20

What a beautiful hike. I'm not sure I could pass up on going to the top, but I guess with all the people around it's smart. Earlier this year when trails were just starting to re-open, I hiked a loop on the Tarbell trail from Rock Creek campground and got intrigued with the Chinook trail up to SS. L...
