Re: USFS oppression marches on with proposed high-Hood permit

Quite a few good points have been made against the proposed permit which is ostensibly the subject of this thread. The justification about mitigating negative impacts to an enormous parking lot were properly mocked as ridiculous. Many of the assertions the Forest Service advanced in support of this...

Re: USFS oppression marches on with proposed high-Hood permit

If you want to see oppression, imagine what our public lands would look like if they became privatized. I know that a gate permit on the Weyerhauser St. Helens Tree Farm will run you over $100, and there is only a small number of people who they allow to purchase them. That's what truly limiting ac...

Re: USFS oppression marches on with proposed high-Hood permit

I understand the funding issue and the increase in use, but from my perspective it just does not seem like the USFS prioritizes recreational use at all. It is a "well, I guess we have to do it" kind of mindset - especially for the lesser used areas of the forest. If you haven't read it, this 2018 a...

Re: USFS oppression marches on with proposed high-Hood permit

Nice. I try and volunteer too, Washington Trails Association is especially good. Of course the time and money put into volunteer work probably adds up to a lot more than paying $30 a year for a NW Forest Pass, but the impact is easier to observe and it's usually more satisfying. Regardless, taking a...

Re: USFS oppression marches on with proposed high-Hood permit

I could be wrong, but my understanding was that Weyerhauser issued recreational permits for free until sometime after the various government entities started charging for their permits. Perusing their website , I see that there are a number of properties that they still allow people to access for f...

Re: Catherine Creek 1/9/22

Darn, no grass widows yet. I was getting used to seeing the first ones in January. Does that mean that they will be better in March? It's all cascade concrete out here in the eastern gorge once not in the driving lanes. Expecting spring to start in January every year isn't ecologically sustainable.

Re: Whychus Creek trail loop 11-6-21

Nice! I wish we had such easy access to all-year hiking trails like this near Portland. Then again, I obviously cannot begrudge the Confederated Tribes of Warms Springs their reservation. We have the entire central and eastern Gorge which is on the dry side of the Cascades and even lower elevation ...

yeah, this has been a great year for autumn alpine hiking

hasn't been real cold either
There's been some very cold days up in the high country. Just depends on which day you go. Fall weather can be pretty variable.
