Re: weight saving tip: carry map OR compass

I rarely carry water on longer hikes. Why should I carry something that is flowing next to me or frequently across the trail? Watching people carve ounces from their pack while carrying two liters of water on the typical PNW hike - just another head scratcher. But the compass is in my pack and never...

Re: Mt Adams really isn't that far east

I think another factor is that there is almost no access to the east side of Adams and no Cascades hiking east of it. It is the eastern edge for hikers. All the other peaks have hikes on their east side. So whatever the meaningless trend lines show, it is the farthest east in relation to it's positi...

Re: 2021 Snow Level

Still lots of snow on upper part of Shorthorn Trail on Mt Adams, starting about 1.5 miles up at maybe 5500 feet. Four foot thick snowbanks that go for a hundred yards. There are melted out places along the Round the Mountain Trail above to camp on if you look around.

Re: I’m overwhelmed! 30-ish mile backpack route please!

Uncrowded on a holiday weekend in the summer. May I suggest the moon, or maybe Mars? Venus will be too hot. And I hear that on the equator at noon in the summer, Mars can be kind of balmy. Just bring a warm sleeping bag for the chilly nights. \s (sorry, couldn't help it) Really though, it you want u...

Re: Clackamas County crews rescue 7 hikers near Ramona Falls

And nobody wants to be the one to say let's turn around. That would be me. Back in my technical climbing days, I would be the one who would say, it's not going today, time to rap off. The weather is turning too fast, we are off route, whatever. I once had to sit and refuse to continue when a friend...

Re: Backpacking Herman Creek

Mud Lake is nice but there isn't a lot of space there. I'm sure it will be used this weekend by who ever gets there first. Finding campsites on a sunny and dry Saturday can be a perilous thing with so many other low altitude places closed due to past fires.

Re: Mt. Margaret - Trail Questions

The Forest Service has maps for water for those two camps, see the links at https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=41618 I don't think you should have any problem that early in the season. You probably will still have snow in some places, especially on the Lakes Trail since it...

Re: Mount Margaret Loop?

The route in that gaiagps link does not do the full Lakes Trail from Norway Pass. It crosses over the ridge west of that. That's the difficult trail section I was referring to, it's not on the Lakes Trail. Unless there is a different washout. The loop I'm talking about connects on the eastern end at...

No, I don't know the difference, they look about the same. The Plus II were on sale and seemed to be what I needed.
