Re: Paulina Peak Nordic Ski, March 20, 2024
Thanks for the report. After a summer visit years ago, a winter trip was long on my list, but one reason I never did it was the likelihood of a lot of snowmobiles. I guess timing is everything.

If you know the area you are heading out to from summer travel, think of camping spots with open southern exposures. The north side of a lake will often work. ...

Re: Labyrinth Trail (March 16)
Yeah, the grass widows are as intense as I have seen them in that area. I think the January freeze and the slow recovery held up their sometimes early arrival, so now they are catching up.

Re: Gooseneck Loop (Cottonwood Canyon) 3-20-24
From my visit up there recently, it looked on the topo like from the barbed wire fence, you could angle left where the fence ends and have a much less deep gully to cross, at the cost of a longer hike. There was a large ranch building - one of those roofs on poles (no walls) that I assume is for sto...

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels
Hiked up the PCT towards Benson yesterday, the goal just being to reach the snowline. After seeing such low snow last week, I thought I would hit snow around 2000 feet, but it was much higher, about 3000 feet, a few hundred yards before the red rock viewpoint. Since I was in a fog bank, I saw no po...

Mt Rainier Timed Entry Permits
With long lines/waits to enter the park and full parking lots up high, Mt Rainier NP is starting a timed entry system this year to access Paradise and Sunrise. You will need to reserve an entry permit for $2 on recreation.gov that sets a two hour period on a specific day to enter either of the restr...

Re: Guatemala - February 2024
I did the long muddy hike to El Mirador many years ago, probably over 20 years ago. I didn't get a stomach ailment, but I got scabies and a bot fly, which is kind of too disgusting to even describe. But I did get there. I have fond memories of gorgeous Lake Atitlan.

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels
If you are hoping to hike around Trapper Creek this warm weekend, it's a no go. 100% snow coverage a foot deep at Gov Mineral Springs area. Will be well into April before it is hikeable.
