Re: Avalanche Valley (Adams) trail conditions

It's been some years since I have been there and something always seems to get in the way of a return. But however good the trail is (or is not), there was a photo in Brad's report that shows the obvious notch between Adams and Goat Butte that is your goal. It is visible most of the way, so the rout...

Re: Cool Skyline Trail Story From OPB

We have it so easy these days. I whine about trees down across the trail now. I guess that used to define what it was to go hiking in most places in Oregon. On the contrary, I think most trails back in the day were maintained WAY better than they are today. Then I can keep on whining. But tha...

I think more people do it CCW to get the hard stuff over first and then you can just cruise the rest. Also, if you are unsure about how you will handle The Gap, you can turn around and not be that far back.

Wow, seeing a marten at all is rare, let alone the show you got.

Re: Badger Lake in September?

All I can say is I hiked six miles up the creek from the bottom last week and it was running decently. Since the lake has a concrete spillway that cannot be adjusted, I assume the lake is still full - I kind of doubt that side streams below the lake would have it running like that. But that's not fr...

The Bumper

Forecast was for mostly sunny and 60s down low and upper 50s at my destination for this dayhike, done last Wednesday. 20220914_091434.jpg 20220914_094546.jpg 20220914_095744.jpg 20220914_103607.jpg 20220914_103934.jpg 20220914_104747.jpg 20220914_113932.jpg The only sun I got all day was when I got ...

Re: Iceberg Lake Mt Adams 9/08/2022

While cows are not supposed to be up there, maintaining a miles-long fence to keep them out is a challenge. The Yakama call the owner to come get them, which he does. But they find ways back up, especially when the grazing below has dried up. The fence is the responsibility of the land owner, not th...

Re: overnight backpacking near Mt. Hood in late Sept

Elk Meadows kind of fits that longer first day plan. After setting up camp, you could go up and see Gnarl Ridge. But I think it's only 3 miles to Elk Meadows?
