Re: Mt. St. Helens climbing permit changes

How does same day help deal with the problem of no-shows when it is all done online? Most no-shows do not bother to cancel, so the permits cannot be released. It would be different if there was a ranger station at the trailhead and everybody had to check in. But there is nothing in the area. And giv...

Re: Source for Timberline Trail conditions

this site is your best place to monitor conditions on Hood. But The Mt Hood Test Site Snotel is now well below average in snow after our record-breaking torrid May. And June will be starting out hot too. You will have nothing to worry about snow or high water by late August. Wildfire is the concern,...

Re: Grassy Knoll to Big Huckleberry 5/29/23

The bumpy drive to the Grassy Knoll trailhead keeps the traffic down. But you can be sure that the PCT will be cleaned up once the snow is gone.

Little Badger to Heliport

A nice remote place to go for a hike on a busy holiday weekend. I wanted to do the steep uphill after the Kinzel site to see how bad it was - not too bad. The uphill alternates between very steep fall-line and contouring/switchbacks. The trail was in good shape, few trees or brushy sections as far a...

Re: Snake River Trail #1726

How did your car get from the dam to Pittsburgh Landing? Linear one-way trips are a lot of logistics. I would just go out and back. I did Saddle Creek to Temperance Creek many years ago in a loop from Freezeout. Some day I want to see how close I can get my Subaru to Dug Bar, which is the northern e...

Re: Eagle Creek to Wahtum Lake

There was a PCTA group clearing Eagle Creek, camped at 7.5 Mile, last year when I backpacked up there. PCTA also clears the Herman Bridge Trail that connects the PCT to Herman Creek Trail.

Re: Eagle-Benson -- Ruckel Ridge...

There we go again, with Benson Plateau being spooky. It isn't spooky to me at all, but many people have said they think so. I cannot figure out why. I have brought this up here before. Since the PCT on the east side is unaffected by the fire, the issue with circumnavigating is the Benson Way trail, ...

Eagle Creek to Wahtum Lake

Prior to the Eagle Creek Fire, I had an annual tradition of camping in the upper canyon and then strolling up to the lake on the remaining snow. It was time to renew this tradition, and just maybe the snow would be melted enough to camp at the lake? Nope. Note that the middle section is burned and n...

Re: Is climbing Mount Adams possible now? (Road access?)

The info is easy to find:

https://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/gifford ... conditions

Or call the ranger station in Trout Lake.

Re: Wyeth Trail North Lake

That two mile section from the notch to North Lake always was brushy and got less maintenance. If they didn't clear it last year when they logged out the climb, I can imagine how bad it might be.
