Re: Multhnomah Falls new fees structure
Maybe the people who manage (and use) Benson State Recreation Area don't want their lots filled with MF visitors, making visits to the rec area more of a problem.

Badger Creek
Backpacked six miles up Badger Creek to my normal spot. The rough road in from Wamic is rough no more - for now. They must have graded it last year. Smooth gravel now. There were a few snow patches around camp, but continuing on the trail, there wasn't much in the next half mile. Lots of blowdown - ...

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels
But you didn't go in there Don? I hiked up Trapper Creek yesterday. I hit significant patches of snow with a little postholing about 3.5 miles in, just after Terrace Camp. The trail was clear for almost 2 miles, then there were occasional trees on the trail, but not too bad to get by for hikers. I w...

Re: Recreation.gov.
I recently was visiting a state park campground on a week day. It was clear that there would be vacancies and the website said same day reservations were allowed. So rather than pay the exorbitant $8 reservation fee above the actual campground fee, I figured I would just go there. Usually when you d...

Crawford Oaks balsamroot
This is on the upper section of the loop - 8 Mile Ck and Military Rd. I do not remember the balsamroot being this intense up there in recent years. I always wonder if other areas are in transition to a Dog Mtn type density. The third pic kind of makes clear the impact of grazing with the fence bound...

Re: House passes the EXPLORE act
Everything including the kitchen sink is how you get such bipartisan approvals. The bill passed by a voice vote, which basically means nobody at all was much against the thing.

Re: May 2024 Backpacking
They are established camps, which basically means a smooth flat area not covered by rainforest growth, usually with a fire ring too. If you start at that south end, you will walk by various camps every half mile or so until that beach camp. There really is not much camping after that for a long ways.

Re: Coyote Wall and other bike trails
There are numerous trail segments in the Coyote Wall / Syncline area that have been rerouted in recent years, with the previous segment decommissioned. Sometimes it grows in fast and is not obviously a former trail, sometimes not. But most of those decommissionings were with minimal effort.

Re: May 2024 Backpacking
The southern section of the Lewis River is as "wild" as anything in the Gorge. It gets more populated and close to the road north of the Road 90 crossing, near the big falls. There are no loops for the Lewis River. If you started at the south trailhead (near Curly Creek Falls) and hiked in to camp 4...

Re: Crawford Oaks/Vista Loop (Columbia Hills) - March 30
Yes, windless days are rare this time of year around there. And the grassy hills are such a deep green color - for maybe another month.
