Shorthorn and above

After hiking Sleeping Beauty the day before and spending the night at Trout Creek Campground, I headed over to Mt Adams to hike up the Shorthorn Trail and take advantage of Fall sunshine. But my actual goal was a rock outcrop towering above the Round The Mountain trail about a mile up from it's junc...

Re: Sleeping Beauty

Adam - I went and looked on Summitpost, and they said this: I've yet to see anyone enjoying rock climbing on this peak but the rock appears to be of good quality and very inviting for such activities. Okay, oh.org climbers - give it a go and let us know! I've only seen goats on SB once, and I think ...

Sleeping Beauty

This short, steep, somewhat remote hike is best done in the afternoon when the sun is at the right angle, and clouds have more than likely cleared. This was from last Friday, Oct 15.
sb1.jpg
Still a few clouds when I got to the top around 3pm, a half hour earlier, the entire summit was hidden
sb2.jpg
Clouds cleared within 10 minutes, leaving just a nice thin lenticular crown

the rocky south face must make for a nice long class IV climb

Re: Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed over Mt Hood Fatality

It's important to remember that these lawsuits are often by family members who may not be wilderness travelers. The unfortunate victims in these accidents who may well understand the risks and accept them, are not the ones suing if they did not survive. And from what I have read in some cases, if yo...

Re: Popular Mount St. Helens Recreation Site Vandalized

There is a TikTok stunt that challenges kids to damage restrooms. Maybe TikTok should pay to fix the restroom at Coldwater. Seriously, what is the point of destroying something like that? It baffles me. Some people get an adrenaline rush out of breaking and smashing things. Haven't there bee...

Riley Meadows

Four miles up the Riley Trail on Mt Adams, maybe my last hike in that area of the season. No other cars at the TH and no other hikers seen (no other human tracks in the snow).

Brand new signage - seems like saying the PCT is both straight and left might confuse some people, though it is true

one of the ponds during the dogleg north, with overnight ice that will melt with the sun

Getting snowier (~ 5300')

Riley Creek is still just a trickle, though it picked up in the hour I was there and will more during the afternoon

Vine Maple

Maybe it's sacrilege to talk about fall color to be seen by car on a hiking site, but with all the photos of huckleberry and mountain ash, I did want to point out that the vine maple along FR23 north of Trout Lake is near peak now. I would add that it is best when the sun is on it so closer to midda...
