Re: Lewis River campsites
Oh, Crab Creek TH is just the 90 Road trailhead. Yes, there are about 4 camps within the first quarter mile or so heading towards the falls. I have camped at the last small one, I call it shelf camp, a couple times. I always wonder why there are no established camps at Cussed Hollow or the other dec...

Re: Shorthorn to Riley Ck
There is no flow control with Thermacall. It is one or it is off. And in my case, the cartridges are clear, so you can actually see the remaining fuel. I was thinking that maybe I had a clogged burner jet or something.

Re: Lewis River campsites
All falls are nice, but I would recommend that you just do Lower Falls in this case, if that distance is workable for you. I assume you are going on a weekend when parking permits are tough. I do think you need one for every day you are out, though I never asked. The main reason for the permit is th...

Re: Lewis River campsites
I am not actually sure where the Crab Ck trailhead is, but there are campsites roughly every half mile after the Bolt shelter until about 5 miles in. And going up river from the campsite near the Speed Trail junction, there are a couple of river beach campsites a few hundred yards apart about a half...

Re: Shorthorn to Riley Ck
I suppose mine is what you call the portable model with the small cartridge. The fuel was feeding - when I clicked the starter button to light it, you could hear the sound of the fuel igniting, but it wouldn't stay lit. I wonder if after all these years, the burner part somehow degrades. This is one...

Shorthorn to Riley Ck
Most destinations on our volcanoes often have fairly short hikes to get there, if the shortest access is what you want. But I often enter on one side then walk part way around to a camp to get a full day's hike out of it. In this case I started on the south side of Mt Adams and walked around to the ...

Re: Elk Cove Trail
I forgot to mention that I got my first huckleberries of the season on the Elk Cove Trail. Not that near to Elk Cove itself, down a ways. There weren't that many, but it was my first taste of this hiking year. (slurping emoji needed here) Jerry - I would assume that if EC was the desired destination...

Re: mosquito heaven on Mt Adams
Well, you were warned and went anyway. The worst bugs I ever had on Adams were up high at High Camp. Going higher is no protection if it is not windy. The thing is that the south side of Adams is bug-free, but everybody keeps going to the north. The south side has more burn (lots more burn) and fewe...

Re: Elk Cove Trail
The avalanche lily show was on the TT, pretty close to the Pinnacles junction I think. So a bit higher than Elk Cove. Aster and lupine were the big thing. Aster is at or past peak and lupine not there yet. There was one other car at the TH when I started on Thur and about 10 when I came out on Frida...

Re: Olympic Mountains - August 2022 (Gray Wolf, Dosewallips, Cameron)
I tried to go up Gray Wolf Pass a couple years ago and was defeated by extensive blowdown. Sounds like that has been cleared. I also went up to Dose Meadows camp and that section of bushwhacking between Gray Wolf jcn and Bear Camp is apparently famous. I spoke to a guy who said he hiked it decades a...
