Re: Ross Lake East Bank Trail - North Cascades NP

but hearing that the trail is mostly away from the lake has me reconsidering. Yes, this is a real issue for some people. If you want to hike more next to the lake, you might consider the Lakeshore Trail along Lake Chelan to the south, out of Stehekin. It's not as flat, but the lake is visible more ...

Re: Ross Lake East Bank Trail - North Cascades NP

No smoke where I was. I could see low-lying smoke to the east from the top of Desolation Peak. The fire to the east had closed SR 20, forcing me to drive to and fro through Seattle - I usually take US 97 up the east side. Apparently people are not expecting that road to open any time soon. Well, it ...

Since you didn't mention bugs, I guess they weren't too bad. I need to visit Indian Mtn again, and maybe check out upper Eagle Creek at the same time.

[I don't know why the photos aren't working. I've done this a hundred times before with no problem. I've confirmed that the image urls are correct (I'm a web developer by trade, I know this stuff). You can see it all on my personal trip report at http://static.deanmyerson.org/Ross-Lake-NOCA.html] Fi...

Ross Lake East Bank Trail - North Cascades NP

I've wanted to do this trail for years, and it finally came together. The trail is mostly pretty flat, but it is also mostly in the forest. You don't see the lake at all for seven miles and after that, just bits and snatches. There is about a half mile section south of Devils Creek where the trail f...

It sounds from this and other articles that he was on the exposed trail in the Mt Margaret Backcountry. Will take some time to get the details.

and fry every living thing We don't know the intensity yet. When winds are high and/or grass is fairly continuous, the fire sometimes moves so fast that more resistant things (i.e. trees) don't burn. That's less likely if they are beetle kill, but still, we just won't know till later on. And it see...

Just curtailed our Mt Adams trip because of the worst, most voracious mosquitoes ever! 7/12-13.
The south side of Adams is not too bad now. People are warned about the rest of the mountain.

Re: Timberline Trail in Mid August

It looks you are taking the traditional four day CW loop from Timberline, and you are going on a weekend, so the directions are to just follow everybody else. You won't be alone. It's the local version of the the PCT thru-hiking herd. But note Jerry's change to leg two. Due to trail damage, you will...

Oh, how I wish folks weren't lighting fires in the wilderness these days.
How else are folks to deal with the frigid weather we have been having of late? :o
