Re: Twin Lakes - Elkhorns

Very nice. Way to snag a shot of the pika! :) How was the bug situation for it being early season?

Re: Water filtration suggestions

I stopped bothering with a filter a few years ago and now just take a USB rechargeable Steripen. It's good for around 20L on a charge, which is enough for drinking water for 2 people for a couple of days, or for 1 person for longer (I've done 5 days solo with it; I also don't bother purifying water ...

Re: grand opening: Silver Star South Ridge

Google Maps probably doesn't note this, but Silver Star (and apparently now Sturgeon Rock) is a notorious breeding ground for sea lions. You can hear them honking all the way across that valley. Re Apothecary, haven't you tried Sahati? It's like drinking a wild ale filtered through spruce branches, ...

Re: another futile attempt to find an alternate route to Lookout Mt (Skamania)

My blue dot below is where the obvious road ends... If you crank up the terrain shading in that area, you can see the road well defined in the LIDAR, and it looks like it does continue just past that drainage into the middle of the next ripple in the terrain, and then stops in maybe a turnaround. S...

Re: another futile attempt to find an alternate route to Lookout Mt (Skamania)

Interesting. It's been a while since I've had either of those - my recollection was that the Duchesse tended towards the more syrupy end of Flemish red (though not as bad as others). The solution used to be Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge, except Bokor got bought by InBev and is now shunned.... </tangent> ...

Whoa, I haven't seen a "petite" Duchesse - is it a young version, like Rodenbach vs Rodenbach grand cru?

Consider it done. I can keep merging the new threads on this topic into this one until the mega thread makes no sense at all.

Re: Best source for up-to-date trail info in Gorge?

What kind of info are you looking for - current conditions (eg, snow), what's still closed from the fire, ....? Closures have not really changed since last year, and all that is on the USFS Gorge website; for snow, check the snow level thread here and that should give you an idea of where the snow l...

Re: Have you ever herd of Russia's Mt of the dead?

Edit: The movie is a follow up trek to where the incident occurred so not exactly about the incident. Kind of like the Blair Witch movies but in Russia with a lot of snow. DN, didn't that movie make it so that the incident was due to Soviet alien zombie mutants or something? I am skeptical of how a...
