Re: St Helens: Green Butte (fail tale)

https://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/download/file.php?id=71761&mode=view That looks pretty steep, especially for dirt/grass/rocks of unknowable cohesion. Though it looks like more rock out of frame right, so maybe there was a more solid scramble? But nonetheless, a bit overly steep for something tha...

Re: Herman Ck / PCT loop

Thanks for following up! I can imagine that would be a rugged schwack down the W fork of Herman Creek, especially if you thought you were in the east and kept expecting to hit the trail. When you lost the trail in the snow, east of Chinidere, did you know where you were in relation to Wahtum? I'm cu...

Re: Early season Wallowa reports?

The lower canyons might be melted out, but I would still expect snowy passes in early July, unless the end of June heats up. I spoke to a local waiter who obviously knows the mountains. She said that they got a dump of snow in May that kind of threw the melt schedule for a loop. We have to separate...

Re: Herman Ck / PCT loop

Welcome to the site, and thanks for posting your story! Navigation in the snow is definitely tricky, especially once you end up off trail, so we're glad that you made it out safe. Like Dean, I'm a little confused - the SAR volunteer above said you had ended up going down the W fork of Herman Creek, ...

Re: Devils Kitchen - Mt Hood

Well done, it's a bit of a slog to get up there, especially as you watch people float by on the chairlifts! I'm surprised that Microspikes were fine for the whole thing, though as you note it's not "that" steep until you get onto the Hogsback, and presumably by late morning the snow would be soft en...

Re: Mt Margaret Snow Report

Wow, I love that loop (best dayhike within a few hours of Portland in any direction), but I've never seen anyone do it this early in the season. That's a long day even when the trail is dry. Strong work! How were the bugs? (I'm headed that way in a few weeks.)

The defiance trail has been rerouted in a few places and its a lot better then it used to be before the fire. Overall the trail is in great shape.
Do you have any examples of this? I don't recall seeing any rerouting when I was up there this past winter/spring.

Side note: per the FLREA §6802(d): Limitations on recreation fees: (3) Prohibition on fees for certain persons or places The Secretary shall not charge an entrance fee or standard amenity recreation fee for the following: (A) Any person under 16 years of age. I don't recall specifically from the EA,...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Now that they're severely limiting access, the 'new' funds will go for trail maintenance, and what money they were previously using for that.. will go somewhere else. And 'clean the routes'? Wtf does that even mean? Please, the FS has previously been using zero funds for trail maintenance. Hence th...
