Re: Indian Heaven - Abandoned trails (and fall colors) 9.20-

Dave - these blue tracks west of CCT are off-trail but in reality there was a ton of elk trails, they seem to almost disappear on the meadows but pick up in the forest. I have been on the other trails and was afraid I had missed some I would feel compelled to explore. ;) That is a great area to wan...

Re: Indian Heaven - Abandoned trails (and fall colors) 9.20-

Are those blue tracks just west of the old CCT really trails? Or are they just off trail explorations?

Re: Alternative Bags for the Sawyer Squeeze

The standby current drain of my Steripen Opti is terrible. I take the batteries out if I store if for more than a day or two. Otherwise the batteries die.

Re: 3G in the backcountry

Can you also receive a message without smart phone on an InReach? Yes. The inReach is fully functional without the phone. The phone, really the Earthmate app on the phone, just provides a better UI. On the phone you have a keyboard to type in messages. On the inReach you have to select characters f...

Don't you also have to have a smart phone to use it?
You don't need a smart phone. You can send messages from the inReach alone. Having a smart phone just makes the experience of creating a message MUCH easier.

Re: 3G in the backcountry

I use a Delorme inReach to text/email my wife. The message includes a link to a map showing where I sent the message. I have sent messages from Mt Adam, Mt St Helens, Mt Rainier, and Indian Heaven.

Re: Anyone see the aurora?

20140912_Night Sky_5.jpg I spoke too soon. When I posted my first response I had not yet processed my photos. While I was at the view point I had not seen any sign of the Northern Lights in the sky, nor had I seen anything on the camera LCD. However, when I processed my photos just now I noticed th...

Re: Anyone see the aurora?

I was at the Mt St Helens viewpoint on Curly Creek Road until 12:30am. No aurora there either. The parking lot was full and cars were going up and down Curly Creek Road all night.

Re: Silver Star access - DNR Road closure on L-1100

Thanks for the info. Did you hear anything about the portion of 4109 that goes up to the TH? That road was a disaster back in June. Do you know if they're planning any work on that? Last time I visited Silver Star I happened upon the ranger that oversees that area. He said there were plans to impro...
