Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Visit Bend has been supportive of the FS through this whole process. I'm blown away by this, I still believe Bend is finished as a destination for out of state hikers. what I had not considered is that Bend doesn't care if hikers come or not. After my very positive experiences in Arizona last week ...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Chiyoko & I just got back from a few days hiking in Sedona and it struck me how such a trip to say Bend under the new rules would not even be worth the bother. $15.00 got us a week TH parking pass, that was all we needed. Trails are busier that Central Oregon, some like Devils Bridge make Green Lake...

Re: The Memaloose Hills and Social Media

Also to limit impact put the trail where people want to walk! A good example is the friends Moisure plateau. (Their land, they can do what they want I know.) The new official trail though is far from the edge and the best views. I'm sure that's deliberate for safety reasons etc but people will still...

Re: The Memaloose Hills and Social Media

I see both side of this argument and I am somewhat conflicted. What I bring up below I know will not be popular but I think it's a valid question. Re the Field guide Page I don't think it should be taken down, If the field guide is only going to be about USFS sanctioned trails then you better take t...

Re: Hiking Local out the Back Door

Once or twice a year when the roads are all snowed in or we just can't be bothered driving we head for oxbow park from home on foot. We are about a mile away from the "back door" entrance. We can do anywhere between 6 - 10 miles depending on the loop. https://guy.smugmug.com/Outdoors-Hikes-Climbs-et...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Do I understand it correctly that a group of up to 12 can use one overnight camping permit but day hikers will need one each? Listen, Guy, no one said this plan wasn't totally asinine. ;) I believe the FS's rationale is that "most groups" aren't that many people, or some such. And there will be few...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Do I understand it correctly that a group of up to 12 can use one overnight camping permit but day hikers will need one each? If so that means that only 12 people a day can day can legally hike out of Todd Lake.. It boggles the mind! I see the South Sister limit is set at 100. however unlike Mt St H...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

If there is anything I can do to continue to oppose this I will. I'll also bet money that this will lead to an increase in accidents / rescue on the South Sister and other places. Now even if you live in Portland you can watch the weather forecast right up until the day before drive down that evenin...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Where is the $6.00 minimum just for Rec.gov coming from? Isn't USFS already using Rec.gov to to issue $1.00 per person permits for Dog Mt? I bet they already know what they want and after a lot of "pretending to listen" they will go ahead and do what they already know they want to do. My bet is $10....
