Re: Mt. Hood Mooney Tarn 09-21-2019

Our first trip was also back in 2010, we went up the wrong ridge and had to climb higher up the mountain until we could traverse across. Ended up being a very long day :) https://photos.smugmug.com/Outdoors-Hikes-Climbs-etc/Mt-Hood-Hikes/Vista-Ridge-Mooney-102010/i-JG7KcWS/0/b0fb6883/XL/IMG_4014-XL....

Re: volcano monitoring equipment coming to wilderness slopes of Mt Hood

....If the FS was in charge you would only ever see the updated seismic logs after the volcano blew.. and even then they'd prolly lose the data. Hood would be rumbling and people of Portland would feel it, vulcanologists would be calling the zigzag station asking for the data: [in late August] "wel...

Steens Mt Area advice

We are planning on heading down to the Steens over an extended labor day weekend. No plans, no reservations, car camping! We have never been to the area before, any tips on things not to miss while we are in that part of the country?

Thanks
Guy.

Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

Half the people backpacking on Hood have nearly 50-pound packs and as a result struggle with 10-mile days and don’t even realize there are other options. I think they realize there are other options, maybe they just don't prefer them. Not everybody has maximization of mileage as a top goal. While t...

Re: Do you register when entering a wilderness area?

And this is based on what? Do you even know one single solitary FS ranger at a personal level that you can comment on what motivates them? It's one thing to disagree with their policies and process, but I see a lot of attacks on people here. I happen to know quite a few of them, camped out on Mt Ad...

Re: Do you register when entering a wilderness area?

But I would add that surveys done by the FS showed very strong support for those regulations. Hi Dean, I'm sure the surveys done by the forest service did show strong support, I bet that was a forgone conclusion and easily achieved by how and what you ask. I meet folks all the time who still do not...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

I've become totally disillusioned by this whole process. The public comment period on fees will be even more of a sham that the the comment period on the proposals was. They will have decided the fee before the comment period. My money is still on $10.00 per day per person for day hikers lucky enoug...

Re: Explain the forest pass system?

The next ripple in this so-called enforcement of the "unambiguously prohibited" pass (see Adams vs USFS; and Bark vs USFS) is that if the TH is near a campground (Wahtum Lake or Fish Creek on the Clackamas River or Eightmile Creek), the concessionaire will give you a ticket EVEN IF YOU HAVE A NW FO...
