Re: High Clearance/AWD Necessary for Trail Access?

Many of those roads get damaged in the winter, and it takes all summer to fix the ones that will get fixed. IF they get fixed. The Forest Service doesn't have the resources to properly maintain their road network and a lot of road damage goes unfixed for many seasons, or never. Road 4109 on Silver ...

I like those concrete panel outhouses

They seem pretty indestructible to vandalism, and don't rot away
They are definitely subject to vandalism. Sometimes the toilet base gets stolen:

And of course nothing is immune from graffiti:

Re: Recommended Mt Hood day hike in March

March is spring in Portland, but up on Mt. Hood it's still very much winter. Snow doesn't melt up there until June or July most years. You might be better off visiting the Columbia River Gorge, where there are a lot of low-elevation trails accessible in March. A popular and scenic trail is Eagle Cre...

Re: USFS oppression marches on with proposed high-Hood permit

I understand the funding issue and the increase in use, but from my perspective it just does not seem like the USFS prioritizes recreational use at all. It is a "well, I guess we have to do it" kind of mindset - especially for the lesser used areas of the forest. If you haven't read it, this 2018 a...

Re: Why

Was this in a national forest? The Forest Service often decomissions roads by making them undrivable in this fashion. You can read more about that here.

Re: Multnomah Falls Trailhead page(s)

I've got another weird FG situation. If I do a search for Jefferson Park in the FG I get this page: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Jefferson_park But if I go to one of the hike pages ( for example ) and click the destination page, it takes me to this, the only difference being that this UR...

Re: Nov vehicle access to Mt Hood trails

Trailheads off of Forest Service roads are unlikely to be accessible due to the amount of snow that has fallen. Top Spur is probably very difficult, if not impossible, to get to right now. You might have better luck with a lower trailhead such as Ramona Falls or Burnt Lake, but I saw a post on Faceb...

Re: Forest Service employee arrested for prescribed burn

There's a lot of animosity toward the federal government and the Forest Service out there. This article quotes Doug Gochnour, who was forest supervisor in the Malheur NF from 2008 to 2011: "It was by far the most challenging location through my career, and I worked in two forests in Oregon, three in...

That is f****d up.

This reminds me of the mother and daughter who were shot on the Pinnacle Lake Trail in 2006. Still unsolved.
