Re: Oneonta open

How many people will see that title and think that Oneonta GORGE is open? ;)

Re: Best way to clean up GPS tracks?

Judging from your second map, it looks like you are recording a lot of trackpoints. Does Gaia let you adjust this? That is, adjust how far you travel before another trackpoint is recorded? Unfortunately Gaia does not have a setting like this, or the "record only while moving" feature. If I remember...

Welcome to Portland!

You probably already know this, but just in case: Trailkeepers of Oregon does a lot of volunteer trail work. Here's their events calendar: https://www.trailkeepersoforegon.org/events/

Re: All of Oregon’s Wildernesses

Wow, well done! Scrolling through the list I see several I didn't get to visit before they were badly burned in wildfires: Kalmiopsis, Gearhart Mountain, Strawberry Mountain, Three Sisters.

Re: Best way to clean up GPS tracks?

Can you post some screenshots so we can see what you are trying to do? We stopped for a break at this trail junction. When I checked our mileage upon arriving and again upon leaving there was a difference of 0.3 miles from all the bouncing around the GPS did while we were standing there. I've never...

Best way to clean up GPS tracks?

I use the Gaia app on my iPhone to record GPS tracks of hikes. I've never had to clean up tracks before, but on some recent hikes there has been A LOT of drift that has added miles onto my hikes. I've never had this happen with Gaia before so I'm looking to clean those tracks up. What do you all use...

Re: Over Half of Central Cascades Permits Go Unused

If, as you say, permits were going begging at many permit-restricted wilderness trailheads, to the point where hikers could hike there more or less any day they wished, then it leads me to wonder what purpose is served by imposing quotas, fees and time-limited permit windows on those trailheads. Wh...

Re: Over Half of Central Cascades Permits Go Unused

I attended one of the online information sessions about this last year and the Forest Service sees the permit system as a redistribution of hikers, not a restriction. They took the total number of visitors from the season with the most recent data (from 2016, I think?) and spread that number out ove...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail in bad weather

Being outside doing any activity in any weather can be dangerous. Two people (not hiking) were killed by falling branches yesterday in two different locations.

The Field Guide does have a disclaimer.
