Re: Clackamas County crews rescue 7 hikers near Ramona Falls

Based on the comments in this Facebook post it sounds like the group was using AllTrails.

People frequently think AllTrails is providing the directions when in fact that app it is dumping you into Google Maps. It still surprises me how many people use Google Maps to navigate on public land.

Is fording impossible? Is it a deep and fast channel continuously?
It is possible, if one feels comfortable doing so, although the water is cold, swift, and deep. I watched someone do it yesterday while carrying his rather large dog.

Sandy River crossing on Ramona Falls hike

Please be safe when crossing the Sandy River on your way to Ramona Falls and remember that there is no shame in turning back if the situation makes you uncomfortable.. The river crossing is pretty sketchy this year. There is only one log and the far end looks like it could get dislodged from the sho...

Re: Ramona Falls 6/1/2021

Seems to be that one of the most frequently-violated principles of Leave on Trace is "be considerate of other visitors." Letting your dog harass other people is definitely not being respectful of other people.

Re: FS Plans Road Work on 4109

BTW, someone has removed the rocks blocking the continuation of the road above the parking area and driven as far as the big switchback where you look down into the valley between Star Ridge and the main ridge. Also, someone has driven up the west side and cut circles in a meadow, crossed the trail...

The Friends of the Gorge seem to be pretty good about keeping their website up-to-date with that information: https://gorgefriends.org/hike-the-gorge ... -hike.html

Re: Backwoods history buff

Welcome! I too love old maps. All the links that have already been shared are ones that I refer to frequently when wanting to view old maps. There are lots of old threads about historical items on this forum, although many of them are unfortunately missing their embedded images ever since the change...

Great report! Always love reading about your trips. Lots of cool history down there. I think it would be fun to do a guided raft trip through Hell's Canyon someday.

Looks like you had sunny weather the the whole time. Was it pretty warm?

Re: shooting crackdown on WA DNR lands?

"No shooting" signs are just another target to be shot at. I agree that they will soon be full of bullet holes. Land agencies don't seem to have the resources to really address the issue. Before the Riverside Fire shut down that whole area, shooting and its related litter was such a huge problem in ...
