Re: PSA: Sunrise Peak Trailhead inaccessible

The Forest Service website SHOULD be a source of helpful up-to-date information, but it's usually not. Also, departments within a ranger district are quite siloed and compartmentalized. It's entirely possible that Recreation wasn't given a heads-up about that road closure and therefore didn't know t...

Re: 1st time poster, still learning the area

Welcome! You will find many hikes in the Field Guide . In the Portland area dogs are allowed most places, and if they aren't allowed that is noted in each FG entry. One of the big exceptions is any property owned by Metro. Out in the Gorge and up on Mt. Hood your pup is welcome if you follow Leave N...

Re: Headed to Oregon soon(ish)

just how much do I need to worry about trailhead parking? Reading some people, it's easy to get the impression that you can't safely park a car at any trailhead on either side of the I-5 corridor. So what do y'all do? Trailhead crime is definitely a thing, but for every report you read about someon...

Thanks for the report! Both those hikes have been on my list for awhile so I appreciate the intel. myalgia? arborglyph? I am getting my cultural education today LOL! I had the same reaction. I'm pretty well-read but I had to look up both those words. Seriously, though, that pain you were experiencin...

Cause of dozens of toppled trees at Hunts Cove?

I backpacked to Hunts Cove for the first time this weekend. I saw dozens of toppled trees along the trail into the cove as well as at Hanks Lake. Some trees appear to have been snapped off about 20-40 feet up the trunk, while others were totally uprooted. Meanwhile, plenty of live trees remain stand...

The site's webmaster is aware of the issue. I was getting the gateway time-out error this morning and gave him a heads-up.

Sources for public GPS tracks?

If I'm going to hike a lesser-traveled or unmaintained trail I like to download a GPS track ahead of time. As we all know, the trail alignments on topo maps are frequently wrong, and sometimes they're wrong on Open Street Map too. I know of three sources where you can view public/shared GPS tracks. ...

Burnt Granite Trailhead has been obliterated

A member of the PortlandHikers group on Facebook reports that the trailhead for the Burnt Granite hike has been obliterated. Probably preceding some logging operations. I added a note to the Field Guide, but it sounds like someone needs to go down there and have a look at some point so the entry can...

Interactive trail maintenance map for Wallowas

After a recent trip to the Wallowas I stumbled across this awesome map that tells you which trails have been maintained this year, within the past two years, or more than three years ago. The data matches what I experienced on the trails I was on. What a great resource! Has anyone come across other ...
