Re: Thinking about trying GPS again. Is there a model that would satisfy me?

I second the Gaia app on a smartphone. I like it so much I've even signed up for the premium subscription, which gives access to all sorts of extra map layers. Before I leave home I download the area where I'm going to be hiking, in case I don't have a signal out there. You can do a track and save w...

Beautiful photos! You really lucked out with nice weather!

I would love to do something like this, camping out on a summit with all the stars above. But carrying enough water for an overnight dry camp is not easy. Water is very heavy!

Re: Tanner Lakes Loop + Bolan Mountain (Siskiyous) 10-3-19

Nice, thanks for sharing! I've been wanting to rent the Bolan Mountain Lookout for awhile but haven't been lucky enough to get reservations. Now I'm wondering if I should even try. It sits in Josephine County, whose Sheriff Department has suffered severe budget cuts. I recently read a story on Faceb...

Fall Color Thread 2019

Where are you seeing fall color right now? We hiked up Table Rock yesterday and while the vine maple in the forest was still green, the vine maple in the open rockslide areas looked great: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48859590782_b035f74164_k.jpg When I did this hike on October 7, 2007 the bi...

And then there's this: https://wyeastblog.org/2010/05/25/stop- ... r-glacier/

That post is nine years old now but I would assume nothing has changed.

How bad is Road 4610?

If I want to do the 10-mile hike to Sheepshead Rock and Salmon Mountain I need to drive Road 4610 to the trailhead at the old Twin Springs Campground. The field guide says it is 10.5 miles and "narrow, potholed, and rutted". Is it like that for the whole 10.5 miles? I think I remember someone descri...

Old Arrah Wanna Trailhead

I hiked up Boulder Ridge to Huckleberry Mountain yesterday. Today I've been poking through old maps of the area and in the process I discovered that someone has added the old Arrah Wanna Trailhead onto Google Maps on E. Crystal Creek Road, for some reason. Based on the accompanying photo it's clearl...

Pfft, FR 2207 is nothing. You want adventure, drive out Forest Road 2223 to the actual Phantom Natural Bridge trailhead. :)
We were wondering about that route! Looked pretty straightforward on the map, but I can see that it would have been an interesting drive!

Re: Very brushy on French Creek Ridge

I'm guessing that road 2207 is still a bit of an adventure? That exposed climb as you near the trailhead is pretty intense with occasional rockfall and washouts to keep your attention :) We fortunately did not encounter any washouts, but we definitely saw rocks scattered across the road. There's th...
