Re: Update on Bear Valley Lake Trail

Wow, thanks for doing that!

Did the Forest Service say what their timeline was for the trail relocation? I imagine it will be a few years.

There was a sedan parked at Horseshoe lake, but I swear it must've been teleported there or something.

The sedan must have come from the other way, not via Olallie Lake. Still rough, but not as bad as the route from Olallie.

At least flies can't bite through clothes.

Re: Mt Hood maps

I really like the Adventure Maps. I think own almost all of them now. They're probably my favorite, but the Green Trails maps are pretty great too, if not always quite as detailed. I like that Green Trails actually sends people out to hike the trails instead of just relying on third party data. I al...

Re: road conditions

I haven't driven that road myself, but have heard it's a bit rough. It's also pretty narrow in spots, from what I've been told, which means backing up if you encounter an oncoming car, or getting your paint scratched up from vegetation to let each other pass, depending on what stretch you're on.

Re: Driving to Breitenbush Lake via Ollalie?

I have driven the road as far as Monon Lake in my Outback and then it got too sketchy for me and I turned around. I've heard nothing but bad things about the road beyond there. In his Mt. Jefferson book Matt Reeder he says that the 2.5 miles from Horseshoe Lake to Breitenbush Lake "are the worst str...

Re: Do you register when entering a wilderness area?

And I heard one story that the MHNF once planned some kind of quota system but got pushback from Wyden, but I do not know for sure if that is true. Forest Service drops proposal for Mount Hood access limits From The Oregonian, July 7, 2000 Hopefully that link works. If not, you can login through Mu...

Old Ramona Falls shelter and former river bridge?

I'm curious about two pieces of Ramona Falls history. The first is the former bridge over the Sandy River, referred to in old hiking books as a "high bridge" built to withstand the shifting channel and flooding of the river. Or not.... as near as I can tell it washed out in the 1996 floods and that'...

Re: Do you register when entering a wilderness area?

So I have been out of the hiking scene for several years. Can you give me synopsis of what the USFS is doing with trails these days? Having once worked on fire/trail crews in summers in the 70s it is hard to see the collapse of services and attitude of FS employees/agency in the last couple of deca...
