Re: 5/6/2021 – Nick Eaton Ridge Flower Bloom

Not that it makes much difference, but the yellow version of those flowers in the second photo are called Glacier Lilies, while the white version are called Avalanche Lilies. It took me the longest time to memorize which color went with which name. ;) My buddy says " Avalanche for Albino" (ie, the ...

Re: 2021 Snow Level

If only there was some way to travel without using a trail. :geek: Ha! I believe I understand the logic of your sentiment, but again, I'm making a distinction between... -"hiking" (following a trail, unless I'm in Eastern Oregon and there's only dirt roads or sagebrush slopes) -and all other wilder...

Re: what's with all the turkeys?

Twice now I have seen turkeys up the Wind River. They looked big and healthy!

Are they native here? Did someone just let loose a flock for hunting purposes?

PCT about 1 mile from 3 Corner Rock. 3,000ft.

Crap like this is why I am super picky about where I hike in the spring (I refuse to hike on snow; climbing is different).

It's so perversely inconvenient to have snow covering only the trail.

Re: Best trail car/truck

Honestly, I like what I heard about AWD/4WD from a dirt-biking friend: "Only use your AWD to get out of trouble, never into trouble." I just make sure not to get into trouble. That's either sour grapes or paranoia, IMHO. If you're that worried, you should disable one drive wheel on your 2WD vehicle...

Re: Southern Oregon/Fremont-Winema National Forest

Hi there! New to the forum and planning a trip for next week. Hoping for a solid backpacking trail (preferably a loop) that is around 15-20 miles round trip. Planning on sleeping the first night near the trailhead and the second night on the trail itself. Was looking at Fremont-Winema National Fore...

Re: Best trail car/truck

the road to the top of Mt Defiance, No, and why? Why, indeed. I'll never drive the last part of the road to Mt Defiance again. It was just one of the worst local roads I could think of. In contrast Old Barlow Road is a genuinely pleasant slow drive; I wish they would repair the bridge. Ha! I ...

Re: Best trail car/truck

That "ennobling" is also known as "beausage" (the quality of beauty from use), as coined by Grant Peterson from Rivendell Bicycle Works. :D I like it! On a bike, I think that would look like the quality and quantity of grease and grime that is present when a bike is rode hard and cleaned regularly....

Re: Best trail car/truck

I often think about the 99% problem when I see a shiny lifted pickup, with no cargo, nor any ennobling dents or scratches, at a paved trailhead . That truck, with all its shiny add-ons and engineering power, is just a waste of materials for 99% of the mileage it's driven. Ennobling . I'll remember ...
