Re: sustainable wilderness camping management
I guess I didn't fully realize how differently some folks interpret that elusive "Wilderness Character." It seems obviously better to have a limited number of well-regulated, highly used campsites rather than free-for-all dispersed camping that ends up with a higher number of sites in that 2-15 nig...

May 20, 2022:
Hiked up the PCT from Herman Creek. Went as far as 3,740', and found only three small patches of snow, like so:
The trail's in good shape. There are definitely large patches of poison oak, but you can avoid them if you can recognize the plant.

Re: sustainable wilderness camping management
Fascinating! I have been very vocal on this forum about the shortcomings of the Central Cascades Wilderness permit system. This slideshow illustrates how an active management of the area could reduce impacts without requiring an onerous and expensive policy of exclusion. I love the approach. It's al...

Excellent report!
The amount of native bunchgrass habitat up there is inspiring. Also, can you imagine having lived at the Tryon Ranch? It is so isolated!

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels
Tuesday, 5/10/22: Frozen condensation along the Franklin Ridge Trail, at 2,800'. unnamed.jpg This is actually hail, not snow. This was the only frozen condensation I saw: the trail up from Multnomah Falls was snow free the whole way! The woods are beautiful up there, so if the weather is good, go fo...

I've driven that road up from Sherar's Bridge in the winter/spring. It's such a pleasant drive.

Re: Inactive members: where are they now?
(It's fine- that's their prerogative). Being fine and being their prerogative are not the same thing. It's legal and it's their prerogative. I wasn't clear. I think it's fine that they have moderated me, because it's their prerogative. It being their prerogative is probably clear to most people and...
