Re: Timberline Trail Backpacking Itinerary and Questions

I've hiked the Timberline Trail twice: both times in September, and both times with a bit of rain in the middle of the trip. It was great anyway! I wouldn't be excited to hike it in the middle of a long stretch of super wet, cold weather, but September is a great season. If possible, give yourself a...

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels

I hiked the West ZigZag Mountain Trail on Tuesday, April 2. I hiked up to 3,300', and found no snow. The trail is in good shape! It definitely felt like spring.

Re: New Section Hiker

I agree with leaivoia: if backpacking, per se, is your goal, then there are great loop hikes that obviate the need for the kind of shuttling a PCT section hike would require. As to the shuttles: You might look into mountain bike focused shuttle companies. I wouldn't be surprised if you can find a sh...

Re: Coyote Wall and other bike trails

...trails that go straight up a steep slope tend to be subject to severe erosion from water running down them, which is what the direct trail does above Ranch Road. Switchbacks aren't just for tired hikers, they also can be designed to keep runoff from running down them. I'm with drm on this one: t...

Re: Paulina Peak Nordic Ski, March 20, 2024

Thanks for the report. After a summer visit years ago, a winter trip was long on my list, but one reason I never did it was the likelihood of a lot of snowmobiles. I guess timing is everything. Yeah- I'm not sure what exact patterns the motorized crowd follows, but I do know that weekdays are less ...

Paulina Peak Nordic Ski, March 20, 2024

This ski trip isn't through such a wild, awesome landscape as that of my recent Tam MacArthur Rim trip https://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=31257&view=unread#unread , but does offer even more expansive views. We counted 20 volcanoes from the summit! The route http://www.gmap-pedome...

Tam MacArthur Rim XC Ski Camping, March 18-19, 2024

This is a great overnight destination that might interest some hardy snowshoers and spring hikers, so I thought I'd make a trip report. We parked at Dutchman Flat Sno Park last Monday and skied up the Nordic trails to Big Meadow, and then skied up snow machine trails to the vicinity of Ball Butte. T...

I’m fully prepared for winter hammocking, but I don’t have spikes, shoes, short skies, or other snow going items.

Where would good locations for snow trekking include?
There are some good suggestions in this thread:
