Re: Best source for up-to-date trail info in Gorge?

Trail closures, as noted, have not changed much if any since last summer. Other than that, trip reports here are probably the best source I know, even if they only cover a random selection of hikes. The FS web sites and ranger stations are notorious for lagging far behind when reporting current trai...

Re: Want to see more hummingbirds? Wear red!

I have a billed cap I wear when backpacking. It combines white sides with a vivid red/pink top panel. I call it my hummingbird cap. I get at least one visit a day when I'm wearing it. Once I took it off and set it down beside me while I rested under a tree; a hummingbird landed on it, poked at it, t...

Re: Lost hiker on Rock of Ages Trail

He's a man. He could just say he didn't want to stop anyone to ask for directions. :D

Re: 5/6/2021 – Nick Eaton Ridge Flower Bloom

Not that it makes much difference, but the yellow version of those flowers in the second photo are called Glacier Lilies, while the white version are called Avalanche Lilies. It took me the longest time to memorize which color went with which name. ;)

As of May 6 (2021) the Cast Creek trail is solidly covered with snow starting at just under 4000 ft.

Re: 2021 Snow Level

No photos, but I hiked up the Cast Creek trail from near the Riley Horse Camp in Old Maid Flats and I encountered just a bit of patchy snow from 3900 feet on and nearly solid snow cover at just slightly under 4000 ft.

Re: Hunchback to Green Canyon -- 5/2/21

Last summer in the Elkhorn Mts I heard both a mountain goat kid and an elk calf loudly complaining about being weaned. They didn't sound quite the same as each other, but their plaintive, unhappy note was very easy to pick out and there was an amazing similarity between them. Those bear cub sounds i...

Re: Hunchback to Green Canyon -- 5/2/21

I heard a bear cub crying in distress many years ago, on the Cape Lookout trail. It sounded almost exactly like the yowling of a cat.

Re: Mosier plateau trail

I'm sorry to hear that the town of Mosier has a safety problem with people parking in the wrong places and that the town may have to close access to the Mosier Plateau trail as a result. Good luck with solving this issue. Sadly, only a very tiny number of the people who are causing this problem will...
