Re: Family Hike - Wolf Creek Trestle, almost - 3-9-13

Just did Train Mile Post 800 to 805 camping on the grassy shoulder overlooking the river. The trail is pretty rough on the legs, where long pants! The wife and kid (10) were none to happy with the trail condtions, but loved the many tunnels and bridges. Lots of broken glass in the parking lot though...

Ninth Salmonberry River Bridge Map Error

Just a note to say I found a small error on the map page. It shows the Ninth Salmonberry River Bridge as somewhere in Southwest Washington instead of in the Salmonberry Canyon-Northwest Oregon area.

Looking at heading out this weekend to the area, will post a TR Monday!

Cheers!

Re: Fire on the Mountain-Mt Adams

They are saying, they being the USFS, is nearing 50 percent contained. Big fire, but probably smart to let it burn all of those dead, silvery snags from the prior fire in 2008 and all of the beetled damaged trees. Looking down from Adams you could see this path of silver trees, perfect for a wildfir...

Re: Fire on the Mountain-Mt Adams

Great Incident Mgmt link... Glad we made the call to come down. My car really did not need to be stuck at a trailhead and I really don't enjoy riding in helicopters or forest service vehicles!

Re: Mt Adams NE and Devils Garden failure

Totally a different experience from higher up on the slab of rock and ice... It was a solid line of climbers coming down the mountain racing for our cars. The pitch black and fire looking down from high above before the sun rose, offered pretty dramatic views of the flames along the ridge to the wes...

Fire on the Mountain-Mt Adams

What started off as a planned trip to summit Mt Adams with a group of friends, turned out to be a memorable escapade to the false summit and a race down to our cars because of fire! Several months ago, I offered to I guide a group of friends up Mt Adams some of which had only been on hikes; others h...

Re: Soapstone Lake-Clatsop State Forest

Thanks...

The crazy thing is this Golden seems broke! He has a huge aversion to water. Will go up to it, sniff it, put a paw in and then he backs off... Crazy Dog! He is so unlike our prior Golden who much like all other Goldens we have been around, are drawn uncontrollably to anything water!

Re: Soapstone Lake-Clatsop State Forest

Jane- Thanks for the reply. It is unique little area. My main purpose in the write up was to offer another option to those who are trying to get thier families into backpacking. At 1.5 miles (or longer if you loop around the lake) Soapstone Lake offers the family an entry level trip and is fairly cl...
