Re: Beth Lake Bushwhack (7/16/2016)

No idea how we got there in the 70's and I couldn't find anything in my Dad's old hiking guides that might give me a clue. I have to believe we came in on an old logging road, but the climb back out up to the ridge wasn't all that bad (once you knew the way!).

Re: Beth Lake Bushwack (7/16/2016)

We didn't take the side trip to Pansy Lake, so I can't comment on the mosquitos there. But they were fierce at the trailhead and some of the boggy areas.

Beth Lake Bushwhack (7/16/2016)

Beth Lake is located in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness to the SE of South Dickey Peak. I had been there once before, way back in 1975, on a family backpacking trip when I was 17 years old. I have no idea what route we came in, and has become more of a mystery over the years given the terrain in th...

Re: The Eagle Tanner Loop - 2015/05/24

I loved the video. I have done this same trip in a single day as well as a backpack, but always in a counterclockwise fashion. The Eagle Tanner Cutoff trail is in far better shape than it was ten years ago.

Rockslide! Trail Closed

Our plan was to do the loop yesterday, but discovered that the trail is closed just beyond the first bridge due to a rockslide further up the trail. Apparently, this is a different slide than the one which closed the trail last year. We ended up doing the Wahkeena "dog bone" instead, which was still...

Re: Columbia River Waterpark- A Ten Peak Hatfield Attempt: 1

Impressive. Took me three days to do essentially the same hike a few years back, and I was wiped out.

Re: Elk Cove Flower Bonanza - Aug 16-17, 2014

Great photos!!! We went to McNeil Point via Bald Mountain yesterday, and the flowers were amazing once we got up to the tarns. The huckleberries were thicker than I ever recall seeing along the first half mile of tail from Top Spur in deep forest. And a month ago, they were thick at Dublin Lake in t...

Re: Multnomah to Larch....slide blocking trail 9-29-2013

We turned around at this slide on the same date (9/29). The temporary rock path looked very sketchy given that the mud slope had water running down it. No way to circle above or below the slide.

Re: More PCT Magic

I ran into a pair of thru hikers at this same road crossing last year. It was a mother daughter combo. I asked if they were thru hikers, they said yes, I told them I had done it in 1977. Imagine my surprise when the mother said "so did I". I knew immediately who it was - the one and only Nancy Gardn...
