Re: Celilo Falls

A couple of weeks ago I was buying books at the Powells on SE Hawthorne. Back in the mountaineering section there was a Mazama club journal from the early thirties that had an interesting article on the falls and efforts to save some of the native rock art. I think a lot of those carvings ended up s...

Re: Trail Shoes or Boots

I converted to trail runners for backpacking because they were a lot easier on my knees doing long downhill days with a heavy pack. And they weigh less. And they dry fast. And they're more comfy around camp. That's how it all started, I first took a pair of trail runners backpacking to use as camp s...

Re: Gear stores in the greater Portland area

FWIW, aside from being a long-time satisfied customer, I have zero affiliation w/ The Mtn Shop. But it's still the store I'd be most proud to recommend to out-of-towners. The Mtn Shop is a veritable Portland tradition. It has gravitas. It has soul. It haz gears.

I'll stop now. :)

Re: Gear stores in the greater Portland area

Portland's "Golden Triangle of Gear" :) The Mountain Shop http://www.mountainshop.net/index.html Next Adventure Climbmax Mountaineering http://www.climbmaxmountaineering.com/ Sometimes I'll go to US Outdoor to cruise sale racks, but imo the classiest shop by far is The Mtn Shop. They've got location...

Re: Your Most Memorable Hike

I've done more awe-strikingly scenic trips, but the Sawtooth Summit ridge North of Lake Chelan is memorable because of it's remoteness (we saw three people in a week,) the boat rides that bookend the hike and that last day of hiking endlessly down toward Stehekin for showers and the traditional post...

Re: Rain gear...what do you recommend in Oregon?

I'm on my second Marmot Precip. I've had more breathable jackets, but none so light and compact. In really awful rain I've been known to make a kilt out of a garbage bag, but usually softshell pants keep me dry enough to get to the car or camp.

Re: favorite tents

Anyone ever check out Kifaru Para Tarps and teepee's? I met some guys in Bend who love their six-man w/ stove. They sent out a TR email about a soggy Spring skitour near Mt Washington. Thing looks cozy! My favorite tents are the Black Diamond Skylight for three season use and the BD Megamid for the...

Re: Thermarest Compack chair kit

Careful with those ultra-light chair kits on Granite. My partner completely shredded his in the Wallowas week before last. It started developing holes in the fabric on day one. By the fourth night it was getting tears in the webbing that covers the stiffeners. By the end of the week it was looking p...

Re: Luxury item

Item??? Here are a few. :D http://lh6.ggpht.com/_qIf29gi2w88/SqFx0d-H_4I/AAAAAAAARak/c9PuHbfclXo/s400/DSCN3912.JPG I got strung-out on the chair kit/full length thermarest combo while snow camping. The trail runners are great for camp shoes and well... running. And a good book is essential. Those mo...
