Re: Radio check?
There's definitely a lot of FUD and fearmongering over it in that community, for sure. Perusing the Radioreference forum (mostly dominated by sadhams) can give me an headache. I believe Inreach devices have been able to communicate between themselves since the beginning, if not directly then via sat...

Re: Radio check?
Potentially, if you know that someone within range is monitoring, but in all likelihood probably not, unless there was a Wal-Mart within range since they typically operate on MURS 4 (154.540 carrier squelch). This may be where one could actually be better served by 11m CB, though really hardly anyon...

Re: Radio check?
Without getting into a huge discourse on radio physics, RF absorbtion and all that rot, I'll just say VHF MURS (151/154 MHz) tends to work better in the forest than UHF FRS/GMRS (462/467 MHz). Five channels versus 22 or 30, depending if you're "that guy" who runs simplex on the repeater inputs, but ...

Re: Reporting on Gorge's HCRH Permits
Well. That sucks ass.
Maybe they'll change their minds by summer, but I doubt it.
So does this mean they're eliminating it for the section between exit 28 and Mult Falls? The writeup, as is typical for the commercial mass media, was very vague.

Re: Cape Horn
Nice. My grandparents' and uncle's ashes (my dad's parents and oldest brother) are scattered at Cape Horn, off the viewpoint. Memorial days, when I can, I try to get out there and toss three roses over the side and stand there looking on for a few minutes. In another 20-30 years or so it'll be up to...

Re: Lacamas Creek/Round Lake 2022-12-30
Only the "L" in "Lacamas" is capitalised. Pronounced /lack-ə-məs/ (like "Clackamas" without the initial "C"), not /lə-camməs/. Anyways. If any of you guys were there on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons last summer/early fall, we may have crossed paths. I was the tall dude almost invariably ...

Re: Best Day of the Week to Hike
I frequently have Tuesday and Thursday off so those are a couple of my hiking and riding days in the summer. Barely any crowds usually, but I also tend to have limited time to hike since I'm not really a morning person and need to be home by a certain point in the early evening to get ready for work...

There is. Trust me, you're probably better off.
I wonder if this new regulation isn't just another desperate money grab meant to extort a tiny amount of revenue for the perpetually-broke NPS disguised as "protection of resources"...

Oh god, they're often in force with batleths raised, demanding blood anytime they break that sort of news. Honestly I've just given up monitoring the site altogether, because they've either paywalled or just outright deleted about 85% of their archives (which used to be literally hundreds of pages o...

Re: it's going to be an itchy summer
Running just as fast as I can
Trying to get out of mosquito land
Trying to get away into the night
Then they stab me with their pokers and they take another bite and they say
"Is she anaemic yet?"
