Re: Timberline Trail around Mt Hood conditions?

That's a pretty fun route- I recommend leaving the PCT for the section at the Paradise Park Trail and taking that trail up through Paradise Park/visit split rock to get some good above Timberline views (of nice new snow on the peak after the front goes through :D )

Re: Timberline Trail around Mt Hood conditions?

This is going to be a bad weekend to be up there, likely the most dangerous stream conditons yet this year. The high freezing elevation will put a lot of the rain into the creeks, and it is forecasted right now for a high volume in a short time, which could make crossings very dicey. Normally easy c...

Re: Lamberson Spur, passing of a favorite -- 08/29/21

Tom- when I did this route a few years ago around 6300ft I descended south off the ridge proper, due to steepness and annoying tree cover, and then followed the drainage and came back up to the ridge just above 6800ft right near that very unique scarp with its vertical array of plate like rock. Such...

Re: Lava Dike below Elk Mountain

I've explored around the Horsethief meadows area and up the ways above Sherwood (such great trees up there) and somewhat up the hillside above the roads, but not the southwest portion and ridge below Elk Mountain. The Horsethief meadows area is one of my favorite areas that I don't understand isn't ...

Lava Dike below Elk Mountain

Just a short but rewarding journey off-trail. On September 2 I headed up to Elk Meadows area on Mount Hood specifically to hike and record the Elk Meadows-Bluegrass Tie Trail #647B, one of the last segments of Forest Service trails I haven't recorded yet around Mount Hood. It's sort of on the way to...

Re: North Fork Muddy Fork Explorations.

Notice some maps call the northern fork simply "Muddy Fork", while showing no name for the southern fork. Thanks, yes, looking back through everything USGS and USFS until the maps aren't at scale to label that far up, it sure does indicate the "north fork" is Muddy Fork, all the way to glacier. The...

Re: Girl Scout Basin

Thanks for sharing! I was wondering what the terrain back there looked like. A while ago I was playing with lidar to look at old disappeared paths around Dog Mountain and was noticing how that whole area between Dog and Wind just looks like a creeping pile of molasses. I didn't use the data for the ...

North Fork Muddy Fork Explorations.

On Monday I had half a day to get to some exploring. I've been wanting to get some looks at waterfalls and more of the terrain around the Muddy Fork, and see if there was a waterfall in a spot that certainly looked like it would be on Lidar on the tributary to the north fork. I arrived at Top Spur T...

Re: Eliot Moraine/Tilly Jane Loop (July 26)

I also tend the little trail that drops down to Inspiration Point at about the 3-mile mark along the road -- it's in great shape, very little work needed this year. Here's Mount Hood and the Eliot Branch canyon from the view point I need to check this out next time I'm up that way. I'm always too s...

Re: New Mount Hood Meadows Trails

Oh, I knew they were on OpenStreet, I just try to collect my own trail tracks and feature layers, and ground truth water flow, collect campsite data for my maps around Hood. I'm working on a detailed full summer hiking Timberline Trail map, so all of this will get incorporated into a portion for the...
