Catherine Creek 1/9/22

We went to Catherine Creek today for hopes of snow and sun. We got both and very little wind and temperatures in the mid 30's at about our noon start time. The snow varied from bare patches of ground in sun visited areas or waterways (which there were many) to about 4" down low that increased to abo...

Re: so, how many miles did you manage in 2021

I have been inspired by this group and the encouragement to get outside. I was able to get about 490 miles of outings - which included some snowshoeing around Mount Hood, urban trails in Vancouver, lots of wildflowers, and some out of area trips. Over Memorial Day weekend, we visited our daughter in...

Goose neck trail partial - Cottonwood Canyon SP 12/10/21

On Friday we went to Cottonwood Canyon to escape a rainy weekend in Vancouver. My overly ambitious goal was to do a loop consisting of the Goose neck and Pinnacle trails. It was a steady uphill climb to begin with and I think that did me in. Also our mostly sunny day was quickly turning overcast. Th...

Whychus Creek trail loop 11-6-21

On Saturday 11/6. we hiked along Whychus Creek south of Sisters. We had taken a few days vacation and stayed in very rainy McKenzie Bridge, and crossed the snowy Santiam Pass to get into the sun. Saw some beautiful larch trees near Suttle Lake. While searching for a hiking spot, we saw this website ...

East Twin Rock? near West Crater - GPNF 10/16/21

Earlier this year we walked along a meadow and saw a ridge that was interesting. 20210619_125908.jpg This was west of West Crater off FR 34, west of Trapper Creek Wilderness. We didn't have time that day, but I came back a few weeks ago. I found a lightly used path on the west side of the ridge of i...

Surveyor's Ridge - Shellrock Mountain 10/15/21

On Friday we had some errands to do and also stopped to get some apples and pears in Parkdale. Then we drove up FR 44 to FR 17. And we saw a cougar cross Highway 35 on the way south of Parkdale. That was cool! We knew we weren't going for a lot of miles, but I wanted to get to the top of Shellrock M...

Re: Cathedral Ridge via Mazama Trail, 082421

Thank you Don Nelsen for your trip report. We have also been trying to do trails we have not done before so this was very timely. We went on Friday, 9/24. All the trees have been cleared - thank you Rick! We got on the trail at about 11 am, and finished about 5 pm. Although there were no huckleberri...

Kalama Horse Camp - Fossil - Toutle Ski trail loop 9-10-21

After being in Florida for a niece's wedding on Labor Day weekend, where highs were in the 90's, lows in the70's, and steamy dewpoints, it was very nice to be back in the Washington woods. We decided to try a loop starting from Kalama Horse Camp. We knew it would be overcast, so figured this would b...

Re: Mount Margaret 8/31-9/1/21

I like looking at the National Weather Service forecast discussion. This is from the week before: "At this time no models are showing the chance for any significant precipitation, but each morning there could be some patchy aggressive drizzle across the region." Maybe you got the 'aggressive drizzle'?
