Re: Total Solar Eclipse, 21-Aug-2017

I was at Harbor Freight yesterday and during checkout a cashier behind me answered a phone call and it went something like this: caller: can I watch the eclipse wearing your welding goggles? hf: no you will burn your eyeballs. caller: can I wear sunglasses under the welding goggles and watch the ec...

Re: Park Ridge Overnight 8/24/14

We camped at the location below (X marks the spot). There is a great campsite up on the ridge above the lake, but I think earlier in the year it is probably a small pond. Not sure when it dried up. There are also a couple of small campsites among the rocks that would fit a single small tent. There w...

Re: Indian Heaven's Lemei Rock and Lake Wapiki 9/20/14

True, but sometimes the problem is that it's hard to find a spot. The areas that are flat and not covered in huckleberries and other bushes are too close to the lake which leads people to camping close to the lake and on the trail. If there were a few brushed out, labeled campsites I think people wo...

Park Ridge Overnight 8/24/14

This is a little late, but someone might still find it useful. I took my younger son on an overnight backpack to Park Ridge. We camped at an off trail lake near the below the ridge. We had a great campsite and I was thinking we might have the lake all to ourselves, but sadly someone else chose to ca...

Indian Heaven's Lemei Rock and Lake Wapiki 9/20/14

I haven't posted anything on this forum in ages, so I am definitely overdue. We decided an overnight trip to Indian Heaven was a great way to end the summer. No mosquitos or black flies, beautiful weather and views. Lots of other people had the same idea we did. There were four other groups around L...

Trail Decommissioning in Jefferson Wildernes

I ran into this while trying to find some trail information. As usual, they want to remove several trails and don't propose adding any new ones. At the same time they comment on over use of existing trails. (Maybe if they maintained more trails the existing ones wouldn't be so over used!) Anyway, he...

Re: Backpacking near Jefferson question...

Once the South Breitenbush Trail leaves the forest at about 2 miles the trail gets pretty rocky and brushed in. The next 4 miles gain about 1700 feet at a very gradual grade but the trail gets pretty toasty on a warm day due to it being in the sun and being pretty rocky. The views from about 4 mile...

Re: Backpacking near Jefferson question...

Go to Jeff park on a weekend and take trail that is not the whitewater trail. Park ridge or south breitenbush hikes. Beware, south breitenbush is definitely not kid friendly. I'm guessing you meant weekday. That might be a possibility if I can get a day or two off. What is it that makes south breit...

Re: Backpacking near Jefferson question...

Due to the unusually high snow levels this year, I doubt that Jefferson Park will be snow-free for a while. Last update I saw was that everything above about 5800 ft is solid snow... but maybe someone else has current info. Jefferson Park is a very busy place, but if you get far enough from the lak...

Backpacking near Jefferson question...

Okay, We haven't managed to get out backpacking much this year, so I'd really like to get one nice backpacking trip in before the weather turns. I'd like to see some of Jefferson Park, but I really hate crowds. (My idea of crowds is I saw more than three groups of people and I'd rather see no one ou...
