Re: Cast Creek Horseshoe Loop with Zigzag and Burnt Lake Trail add-ons

HI,

I love this loop. Did it on 3rd June and cleared a bunch of small/medium windfall from the Cast Creek trail. View of Cast Lake with plenty of snow still on it that day from the Zigzag trail, bound for Horseshoe.

Re: West Zigzag/Cast Lake Trailhead -- condition?

HI Folks, I drove road 27 to the TH yesterday in my CR-V with reasonably stout M+S tires; definitely wouldn't recommend for a low clearance vehicle or if your paint is scratch free. Could be "interesting" if it's been raining lately. :-) If you do the Cast Lake Loop hike I'd suggest clockwise, which...

West Zigzag/Cast Lake Trailhead -- condition?

HI,

Does anyone know the current condition of road 2627 to the West Zigzag/Cast Lake Trailhead? Planning to head there tomorrow 7/9/23.

Cheers,

Rob

Re: Eagle-Benson -- Ruckel Ridge...

HI, Eagle-Benson is open from a Forest Service perspective (perfectly permissible to use, good idea to use your call); it does have a warning and proceed at your own risk... Spoke with the Hood River ranger station a couple of weeks ago and they said a crew had done some work the year after the fire...

Eagle-Benson -- Ruckel Ridge...

HI Folks,

Eagle-Benson and Ruckel Ridge are open, but looking for conditions since the fire. Have done these many times in the past. Can't imagine there's much left of Eagle-Benson. Also... does anyone know when Ruckel Creek might open?

Cheers,

Rob

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels

On Cool Creek today snow became continuous at ~3800 feet, just before the jumble shown below.

400/Oneonta/Franklin/Larch loop 1/16/23

HI, Today I hiked clockwise from Multnomah Falls on the Gorge 400/Oneonta/Franklin Ridge/Larch Mountain loop. Conditions were amazing for January, with lengthy (and not very deep) patches of snow only on the upper part of Oneonta. Blowdown from fire damage wasn't too bad except for the last bit of O...

Eagle Creek (Gorge) 12/26/22

Howdy, I headed out to Eagle Creek hoping for a nice little winter conditions hike. The Gorge was in full winter dress and had to shovel my way over the plow line and on to the trailhead road. Not sure anything lower than my CRV would have made it. a.jpg The trail was drifted in and frozen hard and ...

Re: Illumination Saddle -- 10/02/21

Chip: When I was climbing I passed by the saddle a fair bit, but never had occasion to be there in the lean season. I really wanted the view across the Reid headwall past Leuthold and on down to the toe of Yocum Ridge. adamschneider: Thought about the route you took, but given the lack of snow... wa...
