400/Oneonta/Franklin/Larch loop 1/16/23

HI, Today I hiked clockwise from Multnomah Falls on the Gorge 400/Oneonta/Franklin Ridge/Larch Mountain loop. Conditions were amazing for January, with lengthy (and not very deep) patches of snow only on the upper part of Oneonta. Blowdown from fire damage wasn't too bad except for the last bit of O...

Eagle Creek (Gorge) 12/26/22

Howdy, I headed out to Eagle Creek hoping for a nice little winter conditions hike. The Gorge was in full winter dress and had to shovel my way over the plow line and on to the trailhead road. Not sure anything lower than my CRV would have made it. a.jpg The trail was drifted in and frozen hard and ...

Re: Illumination Saddle -- 10/02/21

Chip: When I was climbing I passed by the saddle a fair bit, but never had occasion to be there in the lean season. I really wanted the view across the Reid headwall past Leuthold and on down to the toe of Yocum Ridge. adamschneider: Thought about the route you took, but given the lack of snow... wa...

Illumination Saddle -- 10/02/21

HI All, Yesterday morning I headed up to Illumination Saddle to see the remainders of this week's snow and hopefully get onto the saddle proper for the view across Reid Glacier to Yocum Ridge. Not a lot of traffic yet on the way up. Beautiful skies, cool temps, and a nice breeze. Boded well for cond...

Lamberson Spur, passing of a favorite -- 08/29/21

Howdy, My hiking partner and I left the Pollalie trailhead just after 6am on 8/29. Cool morning, no clouds, some fire smoke, great trail conditions for a trip up Lamberson Spur with a return via the Elk Meadows trail. Very similar conditions to 2020's outing . Distance: >= 17 miles (Many chances to ...

Mt Defiance/Starvation Ridge -- 09/09/21

Howdy, Taking time off from work this week to hike and meet up with a few people I haven't seen since before COVID. The Mt. Defiance/Starvation ridge loop seemed like a good midweek bet to avoid crowds, take in Gorge views, and work off dessert from the night before. Arriving at the Starvation Ridge...

Re: DEET Disaster Cleanup?

Hey Chip,

Yeah the clerk did let me down, but I have been at this for a while and should have fact checked using my phone. I did follow up with the store's management and suggest they review bug juice choices with their staff.

Goat Lake loop -- 07/24/21

HI, Excited for a trip to the Goat Rocks Wilderness... last Friday night I made the drive up to the Berry Patch TH after eating more than I should have at a BBQ. Pulling into the trailhead parking area I noticed a few things: At least a couple of dozen cars parked A handful of behemoth vehicles I th...

Re: DEET Disaster Cleanup?

Thanks for the responses. The alcohol soaked rag helped quite a bit. Think I'll try a trough with water and sudsy Dawn Ultra next and then try Born2BBrad's washing machine suggestion. My washer is not wonderful so I need to help it as much as I can. Definitely trying picaridin next time. DEET is nas...
