Re: Amazing SAR story on NWH

I did that part of the PCT on my thru hike in November and experienced very harsh weather. I made sure to camp low each night. Had a couple anxious nights as the snow fell and I all I could think of was getting over the next pass. Did Vista Ridge in a white out and had to feel for the trail with my ...

I wonder if the ol' laser pointer trick or a stick with a feather on the end would work in distracting the cougar....

(joking!)
You should ask the "expert" from the wildlife park that someone mentioned upthread.

Re: Drinking Stream Water

I've been drinking unfiltered water regularly since my 2012 PCT thru-hike and have not gotten sick. I do filter from lakes and tarns or flowing water that has camping upstream - ex. below Paradise. We just spent 9 days in the Olympics crossing the Bailey Range and I filtered only twice. Once at Hear...

Remember to hike your own hike. Try not to overplan. Enjoy the freedom that life on the trail will give you. Be flexible.

Re: The Death of Anna Schmidt

Geocachers have used that parking spot for years. We got a warning from the Oregon Highway Patrol that pulling off the left-hand side of a freeway is unlawful and cars parked at that location could be ticketed. I don't know that any such tickets have actually been issued. OK, the parking area is on...

Jerry, it was a signed reroute of the Timberline Trail prior to the 2006 washout. That's why the trail closed signs were in place.

I agree 100%.

No need for a cutesy table up there.

Re: Is the Loowit Trail doable in 2 days?

The Loowit is totally doable in 2 days. Starting at Monitor Ridge is also a great option.

Your 2 concerns would be water sources and the fact its getting darker sooner. Navigating the lava flows can be difficult in the dark.

Re: Anyone completed Mt. Adams Round-the-Mountain xc section

In pretty sure its closed. Anyways, its pretty easy to figure out the trailless section. Sunrise camp below the Mazama Glacier - Klickitat Glacier - cross the Big Muddy - Avalanche Valley.
