Re: McNeil Point 2021/11/20

Nice pics. Never thought to do McNeil Point in winter. How easy is the route to follow with the snow? You said you were breaking trail so I assume any tracks from previous hikers weren't present. I "lost" the trail in a couple spots, both in open areas on the last stretch above the Timberline Trail...

Re: McNeil Point 2021/11/20

Beautiful. What was the snow depth at the shelter? And could you have gone up further? Not sure on depth... somewhere between 6 and 10 inches, maybe? I could have gone up further, and the snow there was windswept/compacted enough that I wasn't sinking in more than a few inches. But I had somewhere ...

McNeil Point 2021/11/20

Photo of the Day: DSC06345.JPG A second weekend in a row with clear weather forecast on the mountain, without too much snow falling in the interim, meant another late-season alpine hike. After Cooper Spur, I figured the other shelter with a view would be the place to be, so I headed up to McNeil Poi...

Re: Barrett Spur, 11/21/21

Great trip report. I had the same thought on Saturday, and tagged McNeil Point from Top Spur. The road was totally snow-free until maybe the last mile, and not more than an inch or two at the trailhead. I started late, about 9am, and I was not the first car there. When I left about 3pm, there were h...

Re: Cooper Spur 2021/11/13

I'm amazed at all that bare ground up there, considering reports of people unable to drive roads at 3000' on Thursday, if I'm remembering correctly. All that rain later in the week did a number on the snowpack. Not so good for skiers, but great for hikers. I also wonder if maybe the east side of th...

Cooper Spur 2021/11/13

Photo of the Day: DSC06077.JPG Saturday was supposed to be sunny and dry, which meant picking a hike with some views. Based on weather forecasts and Timberline webcams, the bet was that the warm rain on Thursday and Friday had melted enough snow to make Cooper Spur accessible mid-November. That was ...

Re: Barrett Spur via Cathedral Ridge 2021/10/03

Nice report and photos! I might have passed you on the trail, too -- I was coming back from the McNeil tarns around 3:30 or 4 PM and ran into a couple folks coming back from that direction (I came up from the Vista ridge TH). -Tom :-) Thanks for the kind words. You must have been the photographer I...

Re: Barrett Spur via Cathedral Ridge 2021/10/03

From the broad flat area at the south end, a trail goes left up to more peak-like destinations. Did you see that? I saw maybe a hundred more feet along a small rocky ridge I could have continued on, but it didn't look like a trail to me and it definitely didn't go up. Or at least, it would've gone ...

Barrett Spur via Cathedral Ridge 2021/10/03

Photo of the Day: DSC05722.JPG I had all day Sunday free, and figured I should be spending as much time as I could as high as I could before these trails get snowed in for the season. This was my third trip to Barrett Spur, and for one reason or another I didn't go all the way to the southern tip ei...
