ha, ha,... the fire was below Dollar Lake :)

why did they even name it that?
Maybe reverse psychology works on fires too... Call it the Dollar Lake fire and suddenly it won't burn Dollar Lake.

Mt. Margaret 2020/10/31

Since I didn't need to be home to hand out candy this Halloween, I spent all day hiking up to Mt Margaret instead. The Johnston Ridge Observatory itself is closed for the season, the road and parking lot are still open and that's where I started. There were maybe a dozen other cars in the lot when I...

Re: Angel's - Devil's Rest loop from Wahkeena?

September 28 there was a map posted at the Wahkeena Springs side declaring that trail #415 to Angel's Rest was closed. I don't recall seeing a closure sign for the trail to Devil's Rest.

That was the state a month ago, it may well be back open by now.

Re: Nisqually Corridor Management Plan - thoughts and ideas

But since the crowds are going to show up regardless, maybe it really is best to concentrate the large numbers in a couple of specific areas and leave the rest of the park less occupied. I've thought about this a lot over the years, and I think its an interesting idea. This sort of thing happens na...

Re: Larch Mountain Crater Loop

Aforementioned tree: DSC06867.JPG Even the trail sign is tough to spot... on the upright tree on the left. I hiked from Wahkeena up to Sherrard Point on Monday. It's a real maze to get up there these days, between trail closures due to Covid-19 and trail closures left over from the Eagle Creek fire....

Re: Coast Range Coniditions

I was out there this past Sunday. There was only minor blowdown on the Wilson River section between the Elk and Kings THs, mostly small stuff. There were a few trees larger than 5-6" down across those three miles of trail but they were easy enough to climb over or around. Nothing like the carnage on...

Re: Leaders Failing to Prevent/Mitigate Fires

People need to understand that what happened was entirely foreseeable as a direct result of human actions that set the stage so perfectly for "nature" to take the blame. The million dollar question is how do we propagate that understanding to a critical mass of citizens and policymakers? I wish I k...

Mazama to Cairn Basin 2020/08/02

I decided to cross the Mazama Trail off of my to-do list on Sunday, seeking a more leisurely outing after last Sunday's dayhike up Mt. Adams. There weren't any recent trip reports here either, so I brought my camera to take some extra pictures for a trip report. From the TT I vetoed McNeil Point (to...

Re: Salmon Butte TH now requires NWFP

Same for the Polallie TH. The field guide lists no fees, but USFS site says NWFP required May 15 to Oct 1. I was out there yesterday and there was a portapotty and fee signs. A couple pages for hikes from that TH also mention it as a fee-free alternative to Tamanawas Falls TH, so they should probabl...
