Re: Wrangell St Elias National Park

Looks like a great trip! I did a 9-day backpacking trip out of McCarthy and it was incredible, too.

Golden Lake 6/24-25, 2020

Trail is in great shape from Park Meadow trailhead to Golden Lake. No significant snow to deal with but enough for my son to boot ski and “butt ski.” Most places to camp are melted out at Golden Lake. We camped about 600’ NW from the lake to try to escape the mosquitos but they still found us. The r...

Paulina Peak 6/10/2020

The trail is in good shape, the remaining snow was manageable even for my preschool son. No snow at the summit. As we were coming down, a forestry crew was clearing the trail all the way to the summit. The summit road is still closed, so nice way to have the top to yourself. Just have to road walk ....

Re: Yapoah Lake 6/2 2020

Thanks, justpeachy, I should have checked that! And wow dirtman, it sadly looks like a different lake from your trip. I’d say maybe only 5-10 percent of trees are still green. And that verdant grassy shore you had is currently underwater and had lots of deadfall in that area. Glad you were able to e...

Re: Yapoah Lake 6/2 2020

Sorry for the delay, but like retiredjerry said, we left from Scott Pass trailhead on the east side. It is at the end of 1026. Road is in great shape even for passenger cars (which we took). We took Pole Creek Road to 1018 to 1026. And I never understood campfires in the backcountry, unless it’s an ...

Little Three Creek Lake 6/3-6/4 2020

After our failed Yapoah Lake camping try, my son and I decided to do another short backpacking trip. We started at Little Three Creek Lake trailhead. A few snow patches left in the trail. Found a spot to camp above the lake just past the wilderness boundary. South side of the lake still quite snowy....

Yapoah Lake 6/2 2020

My son, 4, and I had planned to camp at Yapoah Lake to give him a little “off trail” adventure but we didn’t see any good campsites when we got there. Most trees were dead from pine beetles and I was surprised to see burned trees close to the lake too. I had thought the Pole Creek fire didn’t get so...

Square Lake 5/27-5/28 2020

First backpacking trip of the season with my 4-year-old son. We started at Santiam Pass PCT trailhead. About 10 downed trees, but nothing too troublesome to get around, since he climbed over most of them. Camped above the north shore of the lake with great views of Mt. Washington and Three Fingered ...

New to Bend

Hi OH, I moved to Bend with my wife and preschool son a few weeks ago. I’ve been able to do two overnight trips in Three Sisters Wilderness since then (South Sister summit>Green Lakes>No Name Lake and Devils Lake>Camp/Chambers Via PCT and then the long slog out via Green Lakes). Thanks for all the g...
