Wabbit Season!?
Sorry for the Bugs Bunny reference . . . But I was wondering what the bug situation is on the Timberline Trail during late September early October. Is it Mosquito season? Biting fly season? Should I carry bug repellent this time of year? Just trying to pack efficiently!
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: New to Oregon Hikes
Thanks squidvicious - I do appreciate all the sage advice being given. I hope that my years in the Tetons and northern Michigan (see my original post) have garnered me the skills I need to deal with unexpected events in terms of weather. There’s risk in everything we do in the outdoors and I am resp...

Re: New to Oregon Hikes
Okay, thanks. I’ll keep a weathered eye on the currents. I’m a pretty big guy though. Hopefully enough anchor weight to keep my footing in a average river flow. I’ll watch out. Thanks for the info and thoughtfulness on my behalf!

Re: New to Oregon Hikes
Thanks for the words of caution retiredjerry. I am in no rush as I’ve got a week to work with. If there is snow obscuring my ability to navigate, I’ll hunker down and wait for a better view. Additionally, as I’m watching the advanced forecasts for the area, only two of the five days I’ve allotted in...

Re: PDX to Timberline Lodge?
Thank you Jerry. To timberline lodge I’ll use transit when I arrive. We’ll see about next year’s hikes. I may have my spouse fly out and drive me to the starting points and pick me up when I’m done. She’ll enjoy a week in a hotel while I’m roughing it in the back country!
Best,
Andrew

Re: New to Oregon Hikes
Greetings leiavoia! Thanks for the insights. I am all by my lonesome on this hike - no children coming along and, hopefully, my former experience in the Tetons will come in handy with regards to hiking at elevation in the fall. I’m in Portland the first week in October so just a tick past the vernal...

Re: New to Oregon Hikes
Thank you for the insights teachpdx. Truly appreciate it. I have a pretty good topo map and my orienteering compass I’ll bring along to try and navigate through any missteps. My family would frown on me dying so, that’s not an option! 😉 As far as rain goes, My pack rain cover is a good one and ziplo...

Re: New to Oregon Hikes
Thanks Jerry. Think I’ve cashed in my ‘week away’ from the family for the next several months on my upcoming journey so maybe I’ll look to do Rogue River in March and Three Sisters next September per your insights and experience. Thank you and maybe we’ll cross paths along the way. All the best to y...
