Re: Looking for a good backpacking location

I find it interesting that the request is for a backpacking location in the Cascades with "not a whole lot of traffic" given the Fore$t $ervice plan to limit such activity this year due to the congestion in the Cascades. The other stipulation is that it be in June which this year is shaping up to b...

That's not far. The only area closer early season (June) is in the Gorge.
We're down out of the Eugene area, distance-wise it is further away

Re: Looking for a good backpacking location

Badger Creek Wilderness is a good place to go during that time. A nice network of trails, not too busy, and there is Badger, Jean and Opal Lake. I know there are fish in Badger Lake, not sure about the latter two. You talking the Badger Lake near Mt. Hood? Because that's a bit further out than we pl...

Re: Looking for a good backpacking location

I was aware of the possibility of crowds, it was just a preference. I should've also mentioned, we were gonna try to schedule this during the week for that reason. I was aiming for late June because a)the campfire bans usually start in mid-July, and b)early July you'd expect a lot of people coming o...

Looking for a good backpacking location

Like the title says, I'm looking for a good area to host a backpacking trip with some friends. Specifically, I'm looking for something in the cascades for early summer (around late June when the snow is thawed), that's good for moderate backpacking/camping but also has some lakes in the area (my per...

Re: Explain the forest pass system?

Wow this topic really opened up a can of worms! But, it's been enlightening regardless. Even though I shouldn't be surprised at this point, with it being a govt. agency, but it's appalling how the FS keeps trying to charge fees here & there while simultaneously cutting services and restricting acces...

Re: Explain the forest pass system?

Who woulda thunk it was so complicated to go for a walk in the woods. I've always criticized the "powers that be" for putting in public-use recreation amenities that only waste money and justify them for charging extra fees (I'm with johnspeth on that one), but I digress. It sounds like I'll have to...

Explain the forest pass system?

As the title says, I'm hoping someone can explain what the forest passes are for, how are they supposed to work, and where all do I need to have them. Tried looking up the info myself, but the usfs site isn't the greatest at explaining it. I wanna get into hiking/backpacking, and hopefully within th...

Newcomer from Eugene/Springfield area

Hey everyone I'm Cody. Avid outdoorsman: hunting, fishing, kayaking, camping, etc (whenever free-time permits). Hiked quite a bit over the years, but mostly just short hikes in timber land above my house. Kinda want to get into full-blown backpacking and longer trekking. I'll actually be posting a t...
