Re: Laurance Lake-Owl Point-Clear Branch Road Loop 8-19-17

Circling back to say (three years later) that bypassing the slide John mentions in his report and photos is a rough alternative -- extremely brushy and not really any better for off-trail explorers if the slide surface is reasonably dry and safe to cross. A someday-trail here would definitely work i...

Re: welcome to tick season 2019

Jerry, is this the tick remover you're using? I swear by these -- inexpensive, so I keep them in all my packs plus in my travel bags, too. I've had really good success with these, and the attached magnifier is helpful for hikers "of a certain age"... :D What can I say? I was born to be a tick magnet...

Re: Elk Cove from Vista Ridge (Aug 25)

Thanks! BTW, folks -- TKO crosscut saw volunteers have logged out the Vista Ridge Trail since I posted this report, so if you're looking for a fall hike on the north side of the mountain, this route will be smooth sailing!

Chip, I’m pretty easy to spot on the trail... 😏 Enjoying your Hood explorations, BTW!

Re: Elk Cove from Vista Ridge (Aug 25)

Chris, those are naturally occurring seedlings. I learned a couple of years ago that the burn along Cloud Cap Road had been planted by construct with the USFS, BTW, which explains the large number of young conifers growing there!

Re: Elk Cove from Vista Ridge (Aug 25)

Do you think the pasqueflower seed heads will still have a good show in two weeks (by Aug 15th or so)? Specifically, in terms of photography viability. I think so -- they're pretty durable until the fall rain/wind/snow starts in. Fall colors start to light up Elk Cove by late September, too..! Tom ...

Elk Cove from Vista Ridge (Aug 25)

Late afternoon/evening hike on the mountain over the weekend -- haven't been on the trail nearly enough this year, but I don't miss my yearly trip to Elk Cove! Still my favorite spot on the mountain, and lovely as ever on Sunday! Here are some photos: East meadow view, still with plenty of asters an...

Re: Eightmile Point via Lookout Mountain Trail 7-10-19

Thanks, Bobcat! Explored that area extensively in the 1980s when I worked at a summer camp over there... great to see some familiar places intact!

Re: Buck Peak - 7/20/19

Nice report - thanks! That's a hefty hike (for me), but what a great view. One of the best in the Mount Hood area, IMO!
