Re: Painted Hills/Blue Basin/Clarno, March '24

Nice report, Gordon! Love that area -- I get over there most years in early May, before the place gets quite busy from Memorial Day into fall. Your photos have me champing at the bit... :D

Thanks for posting!

Nice report, John - thanks! I've tried propagating Golden currant from cuttings with no luck... I'd really like to add a few to my home landscape. Lovely plants!

Labyrinth Trail (March 16)

A few photos from my second trip to the Labyrinth in two weeks (I'd taken an old friend up there on March 8 but didn't want to slow him down with hundreds of photos...) :D The Grass Widows are peaking, but the rest of the flower show is just getting into high gear -- and, notably, the poison oak has...

North Fork Silver Creek (New!) Loop - Jan 25

I took a rare midweek day off last week to get some trail time and opted to visit the new North Rim trail at Silver Falls State Park. The new trail was built by TKO and Oregon State Parks in 2021-22 and allows for several new loop options from the North Falls TH, North Falls Group Camp or Winter Fal...

Re: Cottonwood Canyon - Pinnacles Trail (Dec 31)

It was facing upstream (toward the trailhead), so that's why I felt like it was signaling that the trail ahead was closed. I'm hoping to get over there one more time before the Feb 1 seasonal closer, and if so, I'll ask a ranger.

Thanks!

I usually see sheep on the cliffs on the other side of the Deschutes when I walk along
Jerry, are you talking about the lower end (from Dechutes River State Park) or from the BLM access road on the south end?

@Bobcat, what do you make of the gate I ran into short of the Pinnacles?

Also, your "easter egg" is creepy. I'm not sure I'll be able to walk by that cave without shuddering :D
Mission accomplished! (...and I really don't like caves...)

Re: Cottonwood Canyon - Pinnacles Trail (Dec 31)

Last year, we saw a herd of 20-25 run down the cliffs on the Pinnacles side, swim across the John Day, and run up the cliffs on the Lost Coral side (a bit downstream from Esau Canyon). We wondered if something was chasing them, because they were moving pretty fast. Some of the young ones were a bit...
