Re: Eightmile Point via Lookout Mountain Trail 7-10-19

Thanks, Bobcat! Explored that area extensively in the 1980s when I worked at a summer camp over there... great to see some familiar places intact!

Re: Buck Peak - 7/20/19

Nice report - thanks! That's a hefty hike (for me), but what a great view. One of the best in the Mount Hood area, IMO!

Re: Storm-Watching on McIntyre Ridge - 6/29/19

Thanks for the update, Cheryl! The Forest Service has been dragging their feet in working with TKO for at least eight years on embracing an obvious solution and designating the new trailhead, but the outrageous OHV activity there is proving our point. They will come around, eventually. In the meanti...

Re: Blowdown on Elk Cove Trail

Thanks! Nice report! Tough blowdown to clear -- mostly in wilderness, so requiring crosscut crews. I believe the USFS has contracted with Northwest Youth Corps to do some work on Mount Hood this summer, so this one might be on their list..?

Re: Silverstar Goat Surprise

That's really cool! They seem to be moving south in the Gifford in recent years -- also really encouraging. For folks unfamiliar with seeing them in the wild, they're potentially dangerous when approached -- a man was killed in Olympic National Park a couple of years ago when he was gored by a goat ...

Re: Marion Lake Trailhead conditions..?

Nope, I'm going to hold off a bit... 4,000 feet seems to be right at the margins for remaining snowpack, especially as you head south. I think Pamelia is a bit lower than that... more like 3,500 feet?

Marion Lake Trailhead conditions..?

Anyone tried to reach the Marion Lake trailhead this spring? The SNOTEL readings are all over the map -- some as high as 5600 feet in the area showing little or no snow, others at 4200 feet showing 20+ inches remaining. Marion is at about 4,000. Hoping to get to Marion and Gatch Falls. Thanks! Tom :-)

Re: Coos Bay to Bandon 1-23 to 1-25-19

Nice South Coast tour, John! We traveled through there last September, but were en route to the Redwoods and didn't have much time to explore. It's so very lonely compared to the North Coast! BTW, hope you were able to stop at Edgewaters in Bandon for some seafood -- a nice, rustic restaurant with a...
