Re: Dry Lake-Fir Tree Loop (Sherar Burn) 8-20-21
My wife and I took our 6 month old on his first overnighter on 8/21 from the upper salmon trailhead down to one of the established camps near Wolf Creek. Although the huckleberry picking was quality it was clearly nothing compared to what it used to be! Also, it might have been the weather, but we s...

Re: New McIntyre Trailhead Issues
I am not a fan of over policing, but you have to think that occasionally dishing out fines for blatantly violating the rules related to target shooting would at the very least cover the cost of sending someone out there every once in a while and would actually deter at least some individuals from pa...

Re: Anyone ever cross country from Hobo Lake to Bear Lake in the Eagle Cap wilderness?
My wife, dog, and I went up and over to Lookout Mountain to Bear Lake last year on fourth of july weekend. We took a more direct route from the top of Lookout Mountain, but without snow that decent would be brutal (rockfall, getting cliffed out, etc.). Teachpdx is right on, descending from the north...

Re: Where can I get up to Class 3 scrambling trails near Portland?
There is plenty of good scrambling in the Olympics. Staircase Ranger Station area has plenty to explore and that is about a 3 hour drive, similar to accessing Whittier Ridge. Checking out some of the peaks and ridgelines there would also help provide some more context for what constitutes class 3 sc...

Re: Explain the forest pass system?
I'd gladly pay $30 for an "Adams vs U$F$" pass.

Re: Explain the forest pass system?
Cunningkeith - I totally agree with your analysis and looks like I went too far with mine. Definitely needed some more qualifiers!! I'd like to think I was reading the case narrowly to illustrate how a court could rule in light of Adams and to point out that other courts are not necessarily bound by...

Re: Hood: 10 glaciers, 24 hours
The notion that an orphaned lobe of a shrinking glacier does/doesn't get categorized as a new glacier is an interesting discussion. Makes me think of the Lathrope glacier on Thielsen which was identified in the 1960's. Clearly it was part of a single glacial system, but at discovery there were only...

Re: Hood: 10 glaciers, 24 hours
Not sure if Snowdome is clearly a glacier. It seems more like a snow covered ridge between two glaciers (Eloit and what was once the upper Languille or the Coe). Also, the "Mississippi" is just the melted out part of what was once the lower part of the Zigzag glacier which carved out the massive can...

Re: Thoughts on the route climbing South Sister from Green Lakes?
Most importantly, bring scree gaiters and load up on water down low. Otherwise the Green Lakes route is pretty straightforward and you'll definitely avoid the main "conga" line until you meet up with the summit trail. However, I wouldn't be surprised if you ran into a number of people on your route ...

Re: Explain the forest pass system?
Thinking more about this, challenges to the NW Forest Pass probably would have to be site specific or however the USFS classifies the different areas. Here's a link to each NF in Oregon and the sites requiring a pass. https://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/r6/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=fsbdev2_02700...
