Re: 1933 pamphlet for a Salem Chemekatans outing to Mt. Hood

Thanks for sharing! Really enjoyed reading these historical texts - especially the tenor of the language. People were so incredibly courteous and gave very explicit credit to whomever. What a fun time to look back on. I also am amazed that there was a lookout at the summit. And all materials carried...

Re: 2019 Snow Level

Anyone get out on Hood over last weekend? Clear skies ahead this week... I'm hoping to get a hike in up the PCT from Top Spur towards McNeil, but not planning actually get up to McNeil. Really, just want to take my family up to see the beautiful Muddy Fork gorge. Probably last chance to get out this...

Re: Central Cascades permit fees announced

What is the best method to voice meaningful opposition to this plan? Is it hopeless at this point or can we rally enough support to prevent a plan that increases cost of visiting the wilderness? As others have posted, it is frustrating to consider the cost (skyrocketing) of taking a group of kids ou...

Salmon River backpack questions

I've not been on salmon river trail, but planning a trip with family. I'm hoping to walk in 2-4 miles. I'd prefer to camp a site that is unlikely to be occupied by other groups within earshot, but might be willing to give that up if the river access/swimming is really nice. Hoping to entertain kids ...

Re: Looking for backpacking destination near Troutdale

Thanks for responses! I've taken my family to Twin Lakes already and recently, else that was a great choice. I think the salmon river trail is just the ticket. Just so long as I can avoid road noise - really can't stand the idea of hiking along a road. Am I right that Old Salmon River trail runs alo...

Looking for backpacking destination near Troutdale

Trying to get my family out for 2 nights in a few weekends. But have 2 criteria that limit my options, so looking for suggestions. 1. Need to be kid friendly (ages 9-13). All have done this before, successfully. So, 3-5 miles is probably reasonable. 2. TH not toooo far from Fairview/Troutdale. One m...

Timberline Trail Loop July 28, 2019

Myself and three buddies in our mid-30's set out for an epic 4-day, 3-night Timberline Trail loop trip on July 28, 2019. None of us had done much distance 'thru-hiking' (does a long loop count?), but had done several multi-night trips over the previous few years. Our plan was to start on Sunday morn...

Re: Mt. Hood Timberline Trail loop plan and questions

drm - I'm not able to identify Laughing Water creek on any map. Any pointers? Jerry - you referred to Rushing Water Creek, but that's not far from Lost Creek. Really, just looking to break it up into manageable sections for a 4 day trip, where stopping points have some trees for the hammocks. Anywhe...

Mt. Hood Timberline Trail loop plan and questions

Excited to be tackling the timberline trail loop in a few days. Will be hammock camping, so need camping in the trees is necessary. A few questions: 1. Is it required to only camp in existing, designated sites? On the entire trail, or only some areas? 2. Are campfires allowed? I know fires are somew...
