Re: Enchantments Thru-Hike: 7/26/23
That's a fine trip report. Thanks for posting it. I did that trip as a backpack a few years ago. Despite the "permit requirement", there were too many campers for too few spots and a lot of day hikers. I think we are starting to "love the wilderness to death." It would be nice for the government to ...

Re: McNeil and Barret Spur - July 12, 2023
I 100% endorse all those comments about the "tagging". It's disgraceful and disrespectful of anyone else who wants to visit the area. Maybe that was the vandal's intention though. Add litter, hunting in the wilderness and trampling meadows and it's the "full meal deal"...

Re: Something different -- Palm Springs area 12/30/22 to 1/3/23
Thanks for the report! My sister is a long-time resident of Palm Springs and I've been on a few of the trails you describe. A year or so ago, vandals entered Joshua Tree and destroyed many specimens, in addition to driving on fragile desert. We also experienced long waits to enter the park. Anyway, ...

Re: Goat Rocks Wilderness - Oct 17-18
A recurring complaint by me: hunting permitted in wilderness areas, especially those in heavy use (e.g., Goat Lakes) by hikers/backpackers. The loss of the goat into the lake (a source of pollutants and contaminants) is a particularly gruesome part of this report. This is desecration of the natural ...

Thanks! Nice report.
I've hiked Timberline a couple of times. There are just far too many people on that trail for my tastes. We are "loving it to death"

Re: Goat Rocks route advice?
Last year, Goat Lake was very crowded and there was zero privacy. This year (September) Alpine Camp was very crowded this year and any campsite(s) with immediate water access were occupied by about 4:00PM. Nobody was camped at McCall Basin. It's a spectacular area, despite the crowds.

Re: Target shooting near McGee Creek TH
Most unfortunately, the USFS has insufficient funds and other resources to enforce most regulations, including shooting. Given increased hiker usage and wilderness traffic and the very long lethal range of rifle ammunition, there's a very high likelihood of a bad accident. Couple that to the aggress...
