Re: Mount Margaret Loop?

That looks pretty bad, especially with the loose gravel on the trail and the protruding rocks on the wall. Plus, I read it's a long way to the bottom (~40 feet). Thanks for posting this!

Re: Mount Margaret Loop?

I don't have the Green Trails map of the area handy, but the washout referenced in this discussion is on the Coldwater Creek Trail, on the north side of the lake and before Snow Camp. There's a route traced on a Gaia topo map in one of the comments (maybe mine). In any event, check your water status...

Re: Mill Creek Wilderness 5/28-31/2021 (and lessons in getting lost)

I forgot to provide context for a couple of my comments above: 1) The excursion across "Hurricane Ridge" in the San Rafael Wilderness (site of the California Condor Preserve) was an unexpected necessity. We hiked that area many years ago just after yet another long drought broke. We saw nobody in 7 ...

Re: Mill Creek Wilderness 5/28-31/2021 (and lessons in getting lost)

As Retired Jerry advises: Always look back over your shoulder to familiarize yourself with the terrain. As obvious as it seems, the view ahead is oftentimes very different from the view behind. Perhaps you can mark the return trip with a couple of strategically situated stacked rocks to create a "mi...

85 degrees at altitude in early June does not bode well for the snow pack.

Re: Mount Margaret Loop?

DRM,
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll keep it in mind for next year. I wasn't lucky enough to secure camping permits for this season...too late.

Re: disappointing lifespan for shoes

I switched from traditional leather hiking boots to trail running shoes about 4 years ago. I have a pair of Nike Wildhorse 4 shoes with about 200 trail miles on them and they are completely intact. They are also very comfortable. Problem (for me) is that the mesh admits all sorts of fine sand which ...

Re: Devils Staircase Wilderness

Thanks for posting this. I've read about that area and it seems like it should be left "as is". I followed the link you provided and it lead to others. However, I couldn't figure out how to post a comment. I suspect the section has closed and a decision was made some time back (though I can't find o...

Re: Mount Margaret Loop?

That segment - if it's the one I've seen in photos here - is on the main loop trail per the Green Trails map on the "Lakes" version of the hike. As I recall (though I don't have the map immediately handy) it's labeled. I also asked a ranger about it a couple of weeks ago and I was told it had not be...
