Re: Goat Rocks route advice?

We just returned from Goat Rocks about 10 days ago. We started at the Snowgrass trailhead (it's about 18 miles down a US Forest Service road which is in very good condition) and hiked to Alpine Camp (no water, but there's some down the trail to Lilly Basin), McCall Basin (reliable water there and a ...

Re: PCT Sections E, F, and G

A final point: Washington State (at least) permits hunting in wilderness areas. Last time I hiked Lilly Basin (in the Goat Rocks) we came on a large camp, complete with a metal stove pipe, a pile of wood and heaps of supplies just off the trail. There were a couple of people in camo carrying rifles ...

Re: PCT Sections E, F, and G

True about many/most through-hikers on the trail. But, behavior in the hotel tars all PCT users...at least in some minds like the Timberline Lodge person you interacted with. One major problem is that wilderness areas can be so easily accessed from so many drive-in areas. The Timberline Trail is a g...

Re: PCT Sections E, F, and G

I have a different take on the PCT situation described in this report. While the resilience and optimism of the OP are really commendable, the conditions encountered on the trail are depressing: a needlessly and heedlessly polluted lake, abandoned fishing line, disruptive and disrespectful behavior ...

Goat Rocks Wilderness Fire

We just returned from a week in the Goat Rocks (Snowgrass--> PCT--> McCall Basin --> near Shoe Lake --> out on Forest Road 21 near Packwood). On our return trip, the smell of smoke was detectable and by Friday Mt Rainier was obscured. Evidently, the fire was smoldering since sometime in August and i...

Re: Mt Hood loop Aug 26 - Sept 1, 2022

Jerry, A previous post re: the Eliot Creek crossing by another forum member indicated that the cliffs on both sides are now mostly unstable sand and loose boulders with perhaps no log remaining to cross the Creek. That's about how I remember it from 2 prior crossings, last a couple of years ago but ...

Super-nice. Hard to imagine the area being logged.

McCall Basin via Berry Patch campsite info

Anybody been to McCall Basin via the Berry Patch/PCT approach lately? Info on crowds at campsites in the Basin (backup at Lutz Lake) will be much appreciated. I'm heading there second week of September.

Thanks,
Keith
